Notes: Class of 2024 targets and the Penn State Lasch Bash

Penn State’s Lasch Bash recruiting barbecue will be largely forward-focused this weekend, but the Nittany Lions are still hoping to tie up some loose ends in the Class of 2024 as the season approaches. The latest intel suggests some good news and bad news for the Nittany Lions on that front.

BWI’s Ryan Snyder confirmed on Wednesday evening that the Nittany Lions would no longer be hosting New Jersey wide receiver Jaylan Hornsby on Saturday. Previous indications were that Hornsby would end up at Penn State for the Lasch Bash and eventually flip from Texas A&M. Snyder confirmed on Wednesday night that those plans were no longer in place and that Hornsby will head to College Station this weekend instead.

The Nittany Lions are still looking for at least one but possibly two more wide receivers in the Class of 2024. North Carolina four-star Jonathan Paylor talked to the staff about visiting for the Lasch Bash after including the Nittany Lions in his final five ahead of his Aug. 5 decision date, but he’s since confirmed a visit with N.C. State on Friday and North Carolina on Saturday. A longtime perceived South Carolina lean, it actually seems like the Wolfpack are the team trending with Paylor right now.

As of earlier this week, Penn State was still trying to get reclassified Florida wideout Hardley Gilmore up for the weekend. Gilmore, who announced a final three of Penn State, Kentucky and UCF ahead of an August 25 decision, has yet to announce his plans for this weekend. The Wildcats are the perceived frontrunner.

With Penn State’s final camps of the summer coming up on Friday and Saturday, it will be interesting to see what the turnout is like among 2024 wide receivers on campus this weekend.

Top target confirms Penn State visit plans

There is good news in the 2024 class, however. BWI has confirmed with San Mateo (Calif.) College of San Mateo cornerback Sione Laulea that he plans to make Penn State a stop on his journey this week. He’s also slated to be at Miami as well. Previous intel had this as a Penn State-Oregon battle, but the Hurricanes seem to still be a factor.

The Nittany Lions are also expecting to host Maryland defensive end Jaylen Harvey, who told BWI on Wednesday evening that the trip was under consideration. Harvey remains a top target for Penn State defensive line coach Deion Barnes and the Nittany Lions seem to remain in a good position there.
