Noah Shannon absent from Iowa’s depth chart

The first depth chart leading into the opening game of the season can always reveal a few surprises. One of items that weren’t really shocking news items was that Noah Shannon is not on the depth chart.

Back in late July, Shannon, a sixth year senior from Illinois, removed himself from traveling to Indianapolis to represent the Hawkeyes at Big Ten Media Days due to his involvement in the sports gambling probe involving student-athletes from Iowa and Iowa State.  

“Being selected to represent the Iowa Hawkeye football team at Big Ten Media Day is a tremendous honor and privilege,” Shannon said back in the middle of July. “I am grateful for the opportunity. However, given the circumstances I told Coach Ferentz it would best for him to select another player. Since the NCAA review is not yet complete, I don’t feel it is right for me to represent the team.”

Shannon was available at Iowa’s media day in August. This past Wednesday, Kirk Ferentz shared the news that his veteran defensive tackle had been given a season long suspension by the NCAA and that Iowa’s athletic department was appealing that decision.

“Noah has been a topic of conversation and right now he does have a season suspension,” Ferentz said Wednesday morning after practice. “We are definitely going to appeal that and the department will appeal that. I am hoping that the appeal will reflect some new thinking on that.”

Ferentz implied that Shannon had likely bet on an Iowa Hawkeye team (not Iowa football), but he did not specifically say that.

In his place, Iowa will start Yahya Black. Last season, Black played in 8 games and had 11 tackles, including 1.5 for loss and 1 sacks. Iowa will likely employ a three man rotation with Aaron Graves, Logan Lee, and Black.
