No. 1-Ranked 2024 Prospect Tre Johnson Talks Kentucky After Dropping 27 Points

Tre Johnson lived up to the billing as the nation’s consensus No. 1-ranked prospect on the first day of the Nike EYBL session in Memphis on Saturday.

The 6-foot-5, 180-pound shooting guard from Lake Highlands (Dallas, TX) and the Houston Hoops AAU Program, scored a game-high 27 points en route to a 76-73 comeback victory over The Skill Factory. Johnson also had seven rebounds and three assists.

“It was a dog fight at the beginning when it shouldn’t have been,” Johnson told KSR+. “We came out slacking, but we picked it up at the end.”

Johnson helped lead a double-digit comeback, scoring 16 of his 27 points in the second half.

“I’m a playmaker first,” Johnson said. “I’m able to create for myself and also create for others. I can guard one through five.”

Johnson, who plays primarily at shooting guard, said he plans to have a similar role in college, but is open to do what is necessary.

“I try to have the same role, but I’m going to do whatever is best for the team,” He said.

His Thoughts on Kentucky

Tre Johnson is currently keeping Kentucky in consideration among his top six programs and spoke about the UK’s pitch.

“Just to be one of their guys that are one-and-done players that go onto the NBA to succeed,” he said.

Johnson believes he can fit in well with the Kentucky system, which matches well with the style of Lake Highlands.

It’s a lot of dribble-drive,” he said. “It’s stuff we did with my high school team, so I’m familiar with it.”

Johnson took his official visit to Kentucky for the Wildcats contest against Kansas on January 28.

“They didn’t win, but just seeing the preparation for the game and what they did before the game was surprising to me,” he said. “We do the same thing at our high school.”

His Wider Recruitment

Tre Johnson of Lake Highlands (Tx.) is currently considering a top six of Kentucky, Texas, Alabama, Kansas, Baylor, and Arkansas.

Johnson does not have a timetable for a decision and does not have any upcoming visits planned.

When it comes to a decision, Johnson said he’s looking for a “winning culture.”

“[I’m looking at the players I’m going to be playing with, and trying to help me be a one-and-done,” he said.

As for the Kentucky audience, Johnson wants them to know he has a team-first attitude.

“I’m going to do whatever is best for the team and whatever we need to do to win,” he said.
