Nightly Recruiting Briefing: Official visits scheduled
In tonight’s Nightly Recruiting Briefing we will discuss the latest Michigan State official visits being scheduled. We will also discuss more Michigan State recruiting news.
Nathan Roy schedules OV
Michigan State will welcome four-star offensive tackle Nathan Roy of Mukwonago (WI) for an official visit on June 9-11. The 6-foot-5, 270-pound lineman visited East Lansing on an unofficial visit on March 28.
“I feel pretty good (about Michigan State),” Roy told SpartanMag after the visit. “It was my first time up there so getting to know a place like MSU, I felt like I got a lot out of the visit. I got to see a lot of stuff.”
Roy will also take official visits to UCLA (May 12-13), and Minnesota (June 16-17). The four-star released a top seven including the three schools getting official visits, along with Ohio State, Wisconsin, Tennessee, and Southern California.
Jason’s take:
Michigan State and Spartan offensive line coach Chris Kapilovic made a very strong impression on Roy during the March trip. The June official visit is an important next step for the recruitment of the four-star, as UCLA is a serious threat alongside the in-state Wisconsin and looming Ohio State. It is unclear how hard the Buckeyes are pushing at the moment, but the rest of the list seems to be in full pursuit for an official visit.
The Spartans currently have two commitments on the offensive line in Mt. Pleasant (MI) IOL Andrew Dennis, and Baltimore (MD) OG/OT Logan Bennett. Kapilovic is still looking to add a pair of tackles to fit next to the current class, and Roy would fit that mold.
Mario Buford schedules OV
A top defensive back target in the 2024 class for Michigan State, Mario Buford of DeSoto (TX), scheduled an official visit to East Lansing for the first weekend of June (2-4). The four-star also visited Michigan State for a spring practice in March, making his second visit in June. His older brother currently plays for Nebraska, as he has taken multiple trips to Lincoln during his recruitment. Buford has also visited Oregon, Michigan, and Illinois this spring.
“My feeling when I left campus was that I was way more informed and way more impressed with Michigan State than I was before,” Buford told SpartanMag.com earlier this spring. “Even though I am from the Midwest, I live in Dallas so being a Texas kid I didn’t know much about Michigan State. When I got there I was like ‘wow’. I didn’t know about the culture there, the history and all the love they have going on here. There is so much athletic background. All the coaches on the staff have incredible backgrounds.”
Jason’s take:
Buford is a top priority for the Spartans. The four-star told SpartanMag.com earlier this spring he has no intentions of playing with his brother, as the older brother will likely graduate after the 2023 season. Nebraska still remains a real factor, but Oregon feels like the main competition in this one as of now.
