Nightly Recruiting Briefing: Michigan State joins the race for four-star DB

Nightly Recruiting Briefing: Michigan State joins the race for four-star DB

In tonight’s Nightly Recruiting Briefing we will discuss the latest Michigan State offer. We will also discuss other Spartan recruiting buzz.

New offer- Four-star 2024 DB

Michigan State extended an offer to class of 2024 defensive back Jameer Grimsley of Tampa (FL) Catholic School on May 9. The 6-foot-2, 185-pound cornerback was offered by Spartan CBs coach Jim Salgado. Michigan State joins Alabama, Michigan, Florida, Penn State, Auburn, Texas A&M, and more.

Grimsley is ranked four-star, the No. 218 overall recruit, the No. 21 cornerback, and the No. 34 recruit in Florida by the 2024 On3 Industry Rankings.

Jason’s take:

Michigan State is joining the running late for Grimsley, in a race that is going to be difficult to position themselves in late. The four-star visited Alabama in March, as the Crimson Tide are seen as the current leaders. He also visited Penn State, Central Florida, and Duke this spring. He has three official visits scheduled for June, to Alabama, Michigan, and Penn State. The Spartans will need to secure an official in order to gain momentum in this recruitment.

The Spartans have two defensive back commitments in four-stars Jaylen Thompson and Jamari Howard, in the 2024 recruiting class. With Howard looking unlikely to sign with Michigan State, the Spartans will host three defensive backs in the first weekend of June in four-star Mario Buford, and three-stars Red Morgan and Justin Denson. Three-star safety Reggie Powers and unranked safety Camren Campbell will visit on June 9. Three-star safety Jason Cross will visit the last weekend of June.

Coaches on the road

Michigan State wide receivers coach Courtney Hawkins spent another day in California, this time stopping by Hesperia (CA) Sultana High, home of 2025 four-star LaMason Waller. The 6-foot-2, 170-pound receiver holds offers from Georgia, Oregon, Texas A&M, Michigan, Oklahoma, Colorado, Washington, Florida State, and more.

Waller is ranked a four-star, the No. 246 overall recruit, the No. 16 athlete, and the No. 24 recruit in California by the 2025 On3 Industry Rankings.

Jason’s take:

Waller will have a national recruitment, as Michigan State got in early offering in February after his sophomore year. There seems to be mutual interest as Waller hoped to visit East Lansing this spring, but the Spartan staff was not on campus. He tells SpartanMag.com he will reschedule his unofficial visit. That visit will be key in landing an official visit down the line.
