Nightly Recruiting Briefing (4/30/23)

In tonight’s Nightly Recruiting Briefing we will discuss the latest Michigan State offer. We will also discuss the latest roster news and more.

MSU offers four-star 2025 DB Jahmir Joseph

Michigan State offered class of 2025, four-star, defensive back Jahmir Joseph of Montvale (NJ) St. Joseph Regional School on April 26. The offer came while Spartan cornerbacks coach Jim Salgado stopped by the school while on the recruiting trail this evaluation period.

Joseph is ranked a four-star, the No. 116 overall recruit, the No. 15 cornerback, and the No.3 recruit in New Jersey according to the 2024 On3 Industry Rankings. His other offers include Georiga, Ohio State, Penn State, Notre Dame, and more.

“(His experience), it plays a part in my recruiting because I know that he will build on how much of a player I am in the future,” Joseph said of Salgado. “I think that it is great. Having someone coming to recruit you and you know that they had coached the best of the best.”

Payton Thorne, Keon Coleman, and Charles Brantley hit the transfer portal

Michigan State wide receiver Keon Coleman entered the transfer portal on April 30, just an little over an hour after quarterback Payton Thorne’s decision to do the same.

Coleman is widely regarded as the most talented player on the Michigan State roster. The wide receiver position isn’t as important as quarterback, but there are strong indications that Thorne is or was going to have a hard time holding off redshirt-junior quarterback Noah Kim for the starting QB job in 2023. However, there is a steep dropoff from Coleman to the next most talented wide receivers on the roster.

Sources tell SpartanMag that LSUAuburn and Oklahoma are among the schools that are pursuing Coleman.

The Michigan State roster took another hit when cornerback Charles Brantley also hit the transfer portal.

Brantley has appeared in 19 career games and made 12 starts in his two seasons with the Spartans. He made a big impact in his true freshman year recording 18 tackles, four pass breakups, and an interception before suffering a season-ending leg injury just six games into the 2021 season.

He started in all 11 games he played in 2022 notching 48 tackles, two tackles for loss, a team-leading six pass breakups, and an interception for a TD against Ohio State.
