Nick Saban analyzes Travis Hunter’s usage, how Colorado must manage workload

Nick Saban analyzes Travis Hunter’s usage, how Colorado must manage workload

Nick Saban couldn’t do anything but praise Travis Hunter for the two-way Colorado star’s play on both sides of the football.

The former Alabama Crimson Tide leader was more than impressed with Hunter’s ability to play almost every snap on both sides of the football at wide receiver and cornerback, and it was evident in Saban’s comments regarding the Buffaloes star on Saturday’s edition of ESPN College GameDay.

“First of all, I love a great competitor, and this guy wants to play that many plays to help his team. He’s not worried about himself,” Saban stated. “I think, in this day and age though, with the technology that we have, you know, Catapult systems to tell you about speed and explosive power and all that. If you could manage a guy in practice, because corner and wide receiver are not really positions to take multiple reps in practice, right? You know, they’re easy to prepare for the game. He might be able to sustain the season.

“We had Smitty (DeVonta Smith), you know, back in Alabama a few years ago, he was probably the one of the best corners on our team, and wide receivers. We never had to play them both ways, but we really watched closely what his Catapult numbers were, so that we weren’t going to minimize his opportunities to be successful, because we’re wearing him out.”

Gaining the praise of Saban is no small feat, and Hunter is certainly deserving. Kirk Herbstreit chimed in as well, explaining why the college football world should appreciate what Hunter’s been doing throughout his time in Boulder.

“I think it’s important for people to appreciate what the kid’s doing,” Herbstreit added. “I mean, he’s playing every play. Charles Woodson, when he was here, he would spot duty at receiver. This guy is here every play.”

Travis Hunter will have another shot to impress on Saturday, as Colorado takes on Nebraska in what should be an awesome game in Week 2.
