Newsstand: Why Joel Klatt thinks Notre Dame cannot win a national title in 2023
During his show Wednesday, Fox Sports analyst Joel Klatt named the 2023 college football teams that are “above the line” — by his standards, the ones he think can still legitimately win a national championship this season. Notre Dame was not among them.
Klatt had the Fighting Irish as the first team below the line.
“I had to draw the line somewhere and I had to draw it above Notre Dame,” Klatt said. “And the reason was is that, as positively as I feel about Notre Dame coming out of the game against Ohio State — and I really do, I was impressed with them, I think that they have a quarterback that is a real quarterback now, it takes them, their ceiling is so much higher than it has been over the last few years, they’re talented — and yet they had the home field advantage, they had the momentum on their side in the second half, they had it right there for the taking and still got beat. So, it’s like, all of the ghosts for Notre Dame are still there. They still haven’t done it.”

Above the line: Georgia, Washington, Texas, Michigan, Ohio State, Oregon, Penn State, USC, Utah, Florida State.
Just below the line: Notre Dame, Oklahoma, Alabama, LSU, Washington State.
