Newsstand: Why Chris Tyree switched jersey numbers for the second time this year
One day before Notre Dame kicks off the regular season in Ireland against Navy, Irish wide receiver Chris Tyree has changed his jersey number from 2 to 4.
The Notre Dame senior, Tyree, told reporters at a mini media day event at Aviva Stadium on Thursday that he had to switch numbers after they realized there was a number conflict on the punt return unit.
Tyree, who will return punts for Notre Dame this season, and safety DJ Brown are both on the punt return squad. Brown wears number 2, so Tyree decided to switch back to his high school number from his time back at Chester (Va.) Thomas Dale.
The 5-9 ½, 192-pound Tyree signed with the Irish in the 2020 recruiting cycle as a running back. He played that position for the previous three seasons and racked up 1,162 rushing yards and eight touchdowns on 229 carries. He also caught 56 passes for 461 yards and four scores.
A crowded running back depth chart prompted Tyree to move to slot wide receiver in the spring … and change from No. 25 to No. 2. But before his senior season began, he took one for the team once again, and will wear a new number along with his new position.
