Newsstand: Welcome to the unofficial start of football

Newsstand: Welcome to the unofficial start of football

Michigan football is still a week or so away from the start of fall camp, but in many ways, the 2023 season gets started in earnest this week. The Wolverines and the rest of their Big Ten foes will make their way to Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis this week for football media days.

Michigan will take the podium on Thursday, July 27 with head coach Jim Harbaugh, senior running back Blake Corum, senior defensive lineman Kris Jenkins and graduate defensive back Mike Sainristil will represent the program there. It seems more likely than not that the three players being sent are favorites to be team captains this fall.

For Harbaugh, the anticipation is always palpable. He lives and breathes the game, and he finally gets to get on the field with a team looking to win its third-straight Big Ten title this season.

“During the competition, I literally stand there on the sideline — it’s like being in the dentist chair getting a root canal done for three and a half hours,” Harbaugh said to ESPN in 2015. “I love it when we win. I really enjoy that.”

There are still 40 days to kickoff, but the competition is quickly approaching for the Michigan football team. They open the season on Sept. 2 against the East Carolina Pirates at the Big House, a game set for noon kickoff exclusively on NBC’s Peacock app.

Michigan quote of the day

“I bulked up; I got to 225. But now I’m currently 215. I bulked up in the winter, shed a little bit. I’ll probably shed a few and play at like 212, 213. I played at 208, 210 last year. I put on a couple pounds, and in the winter I was huge, but I lost some of that. But I feel good. I’m stronger than ever, I’m faster and my cutting ability is crazy, so I’m feeling great, man. I’m excited to get back out there. I’ve been putting in the work, our team has been putting in the work. I’m just excited.”
