Newsstand: Veteran Notre Dame linebacker Jack Kiser named Campbell Trophy semifinalist

Newsstand: Veteran Notre Dame linebacker Jack Kiser named Campbell Trophy semifinalist

For the second year in a row, Notre Dame has a linebacker in the running for the the National Football Foundation’s William V. Campbell Trophy, “college football’s premier scholar-athlete award that annually recognizes an individual as the absolute best in the nation for his combined academic success, football performance and exemplary leadership” per the Fighting Irish’s official press release.

It’s graduate student Jack Kiser who’s a semifinalist this year. Kiser, one of five team captains, is following in the footsteps of the Atlanta Falcons’ JD Bertrand, who was a finalist in 2023.

Kiser has 207 tackles and counting now playing in his sixth season with the Irish. He’s been a staple rotational player for multiple years now and was named the Irish’s special teams player of the year in 2023 at the end-of-season awards banquet. As the unquestioned leader in the middle of the 2024 Irish defense, Kiser leads the team with 22 total tackles through four games.

Kiser has two degrees from Notre Dame, including a Master’s in Accounting. He was the top-ranked student in his graduating class for that particular program.

Notre Dame tweets of the day

Riley Leonard is not a total liability throwing the ball downfield despite what social media and message board critics would have you know.

Some don’t want to hear it but this is a Notre Dame TD if Kris Mitchell isn’t interfered with.

Riley Leonard sees the single-high safety hugging the shallow seam. One-on-one for the deep post. Mitchell hasn’t gone by the CB yet but Leonard gives him a shot anyway.

This is the Howard Cross III who helped make the Fighting Irish defense one of the best in the country in 2023.

Notre Dame needs more pass-rush wins like this one from Howard Cross III.

He tosses the right guard to the side then works back upfield to the QB climbing the pocket. Nothing could stop him from registering a sack. Undeniable.

Fighting Irish men’s basketball coach Micah Shrewsberry seriously cares about the young men he’s recruiting. Here he is with five-star commit Jalen Haralson.

Fighting Irish quote of the day

“Get better every day. That’s it. That’s the only thing I focus on. If you set an expectation for them, what if we crush it, right? What if I say, ‘Let’s win 20 games.’ What if we go 20-0? Are we just gonna relax? We’re done? We’ve hit our goals? No, our goal is to get better.”
