Newsstand: OSU suffered ‘psychological damage’ from last two losses to U-M

Newsstand: OSU suffered ‘psychological damage’ from last two losses to U-M

Michigan football has dominated the rivalry with Ohio State over the last two years with a pair of wins over the Buckeyes. Even with two decades of domination in the rivalry, OSU fans are in mental anguish over how the last two seasons have gone.

On3’s JD PicKell discussed the rivalry with Andy Staples recently, where the mental side of the showdown came into focus.

“Here’s the deal with Ohio State; it’s very interesting because (there’s) so much psychological damage from those two losses to Michigan,” said Staples. “But if we’re being real here, Ohio State is one defensive stop away from being the national champion, because they would’ve beaten TCU.

“For Ryan Day’s sake, he needs to beat Michigan. Don’t allow those John Cooper comparisons to fester. Job description is important. Like when you’re in a job, it’s very important for your bosses or your employers, your stakeholders to tell you exactly what the expectations are. So let me tell you what the expectations are for Ryan Day at Ohio State: win the national championship. That’s it. Those are the expectations. And the longer he goes without one, the madder they get. So he needs to put them in position to win a national title.”

Michigan took down OSU by a score of 42-27 in 2021 in Ann Arbor and followed it up with a 45-23 victory over the Buckeyes in Columbus last season, their first win at The Horseshoe since 2000. The two teams will meet on Nov. 25 in Ann Arbor to renew their hated rivalry.

Michigan quote of the day

“I would say people are obsessed with sports here. Any sport. Footballbasketball, hockey, lacrosse, water polo. You can say America is the place where the dreams can come true. You can certainly see at Michigan too. I watched a volleyball game. We’re competitive in that. You go watch lacrosse, they’re like top five in the country. Baseball. Just seeing that and being in a place where it’s great? It’s something I truly appreciate. Back in Lebanon, we have basketball teams, we have soccer teams. But you don’t see, like, universities that have all teams combined that are great at everything. That’s been a little bit surprising for me.”
