Newsstand: Notre Dame’s Olivia Miles named Kay Yow Scholar Athlete of the Year

Notre Dame guard Olivia Miles gets it done on and off the basketball court. The senior who already holds a degree in political science was named the Kay Yow Scholar Athlete of the Year on Wednesday.

The award is given to a top women’s basketball player in the ACC who excels both academically and athletically. Miles is currently pursuing a degree in nonprofit management while the Fighting Irish go after an ACC Tournament title this weekend and a national championship in the weeks to come.

Miles is a two-time All-ACC Academic Team member. While sitting out last season because of a knee injury, she made the ACC Academic Honor Roll.

Miles is averaging 16.5 points, 6.1 rebounds and 5.9 assists per game in what very well might be her final season in an Irish uniform even though she has one season left to play if she so chooses because of a medical redshirt. She’s one of four players in the country averaging 16/6/5, and she leads the nation this season with three triple-doubles.

No. 2 seed Notre Dame (25-4) begins the ACC Tournament in Greensboro, N.C., at 5 p.m. ET Friday against an opponent to be determined Thursday. It’ll either be No. 7 seed California or No. 10 seed Virginia.

Fighting Irish quote of the day

“Even with her foul trouble, her getting back healthy, her presence means a lot to this team. Her leadership. I think she’s going to continue getting better. She just does whatever is needed for this team. I think you’ll see even more of her consistency as the stakes are higher now.”
