Newsstand: Notre Dame men’s lacrosse punches ticket to Final Four in Philadelphia

Notre Dame is headed to the Final Four. On Sunday, the No. 3 Fighting Irish men’s lacrosse team defeated No. 6 Johns Hopkins, 12-9, at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium in Annapolis, Md., to advance to the NCAA championship semifinal.

The Irish will face No. 3 Virginia on Saturday. It will be the sixth time Notre Dame has advanced to the Final Four and its first trip since 2016. It also made it to championship weekend in 2001, 2010, 2012 and 2014.

ND claimed a first-round NCAA Tournament win (20-7) against Utah at home on May 13. The Irish have won their last three outings.

Notre Dame’s (11-2) only two losses of the season have come against the Cavaliers. The Irish fell 15-10 at home on March 25 and 12-8 on the road on April 30.

Virginia (13-3) is riding a five-game win streak and coming off back-to-back 17-goal outings in the NCAA Tournament. The Cavaliers took down Georgetown, 17-14, on Saturday.

Notre Dame has not beaten Virginia since April 29, 2018, when it won 17-7 in Charlottesville, Va. That same season, the Irish also beat the Cavaliers 9-7 at home.

Saturday’s Final Four clash is at 2:30 p.m. at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia. It will be televised on ESPN2.
