Newsstand: Notre Dame HC Marcus Freeman named Coach of the Year finalist
Notre Dame head coach Marcus Freeman is a finalist for the Eddie Robinson Coach of the Year Award, the Football Writers Association of America announced Tuesday. Freeman is one of nine nominees for the award, including his first-round opponent, Indiana’s Curt Cignetti.
The other seven finalists are South Carolina’s Shane Beamer, Boise State’s Spencer Danielson, Arizona State’s Kenny Dillingham, Oregon’s Dan Lanning, SMU’s Rhett Lashlee, Army’s Jeff Monken and Georgia’s Kirby Smart. The winner will be announced Dec. 16, and the official presentation is Jan. 18.
Freeman’s season began with a signature win at Texas A&M and a disastrous home loss to Northern Illinois. It was his job to fix the issues that ailed the Irish on Sept. 7, and fix them he did. Since that day, Notre Dame has won each of its final 10 games and secured the No. 7 seed in the 12-team College Football Playoff. With that comes the right to host Indiana in the first round.
The Irish take on the Hoosiers at 8:00 p.m. ET on Saturday in South Bend.
