Newsstand: Notre Dame commit tabbed as one of fastest high school players

One of the fastest high school football players in the country is a Notre Dame commit. Four-star wide receiver Cam Williams of Glen Ellyn (Ill.) Glenbard South checked in at No. 6 nationally among players with verified in-game top speeds recorded by Reel Analytics for the 2022 season.
Williams had a verified top speed of 22.0 miles per last fall. According Next Gen Stats, Parris Campbell of the Indianapolis Colts had a top ball-carrying speed of 22.11 miles per hour in 2022. That led the NFL. Only one other player, Kenneth Walker of the Seattle Seahawks, topped out at over 22.0 miles per hour.
Williams would have recorded the third fastest top speed in the NFL last year.
Of course, top speeds are relative to situational football. Williams averaged 20.0 yards per reception and 8.5 yards per rush on 57 total touches in his junior season according to MaxPreps. Jaylen Waddle of the Miami Dolphins led the NFL with 18.1 yards per catch. Twenty yards per catch is unheard at the highest level of the sport, so there are less opportunities to display true breakaway top speed.
Still, 22.0 miles per hour is blazing in any setting. The Fighting Irish are getting a good one in Williams.
Tweets of the day
This could be a common connection for Notre Dame this season: Sam Hartman to Chris Tyree.
Of course, the Irish running game will still dictate the flow of the offense. The ground game is in good hands with Audric Estimé leading the charge.
In Notre Dame alumni news, kicker Blake Grupe is getting his shot at the next level with the New Orleans Saints.
Quote of the day
“We will have strong belief in our players and our staff and we’ll trust our plan. We’ll put that power into them and let them feel our confidence and give them opportunities. If they’re not quite ready by the time we give enough, then we’ll make sure we keep empowering them to get there. But we’ll get our guys who are ready to go [on the field].”
