Newsstand: Notre Dame coach Marcus Freeman meets Super Bowl champion Sean Payton
It’s been a busy few weeks for Notre Dame head coach Marcus Freeman since Fighting Irish spring football practices concluded with the Blue-Gold Game on April 22. For much of May, Freeman’s assistants have been on the road recruiting. Head coaches aren’t allowed to accompany them during this time per NCAA rules.
So Freeman has taken up other activities.
Katy Lonergan, the associate athletics director for strategic and football communications at Notre Dame, has documented his travels.
Freeman has been to plenty of alumni association events, including one in historic Gettysburg, Pa. He also spent a day at Under Armour’s headquarters in Baltimore. On May 4, Freeman ate lunch at the Hartman house — yes, that Hartman house. Irish quarterback Sam Hartman and his folks hosted Freeman in Mount Pleasant, S.C. Freeman even went to the Kentucky Derby on May 6.
For someone who loves football as much as Freeman, though, Tuesday might’ve included one of his favorite adventures so far. While in Denver for another alumni event, Freeman snuck in a 90-minute meeting with Super Bowl XLIV champion and current Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton. Lonergan wrote that Freeman picked Payton’s brain about various topics.
Not a bad brain to pick.
