Newsstand: Michigan transfer makes top-25 list making jump to Power Five

Newsstand: Michigan transfer makes top-25 list making jump to Power Five

Michigan football hit the transfer portal hard this offseason to backfill needs on the roster. Among them is former Coastal Carolina EDGE Josaiah Stewart, who is making the leap from a Group of Five school to the Power Five by joining the Big Ten.

That designation has him listed among the best players making the leap up to the most competitive level in the sport, coming in at No. 5 from On3.com.

“The Coastal Carolina pass rusher had a great spring for the Wolverines, as the 6-2, 235-pound senior is set to replace Mazi Smith off the edge for Big Blue in 2023. Stewart had 12.5 sacks for the Chanticleers in 2021 and 10.0 TFLs in 2022,” On3’s Jesse Simonton said.

Here’s what we said about Stewart following a strong camp and spring game performance:

Stewart stands at 6-2, 230 pounds, making him a bit undersized compared to his peers and a bit of an outlier as far as NFL prospects off the EDGE come. From a body type and play-style perspective, he reminds me of Hasson Reddick of the Philadelphia Eagles. Stewart has an explosive first step that should allow him to have an early advantage against his opponents and he does a really nice job converting his rush from speed to power. Plus, he has the proven production to boot with 79 tackles, 25.5 tackles for a loss, 16.0 sacks, four forced fumbles and a pass defended during his two seasons at Coastal Carolina.

He has the benefit of a full offseason to get the playbook down, too. But he looks the part and has the chance to be Michigan’s most explosive pass rusher.

I want to come out and address the issue that I did not and would never belittle the University of Michigan. They gave me a chance of a life time, I created bonds and friendships that will last forever with Coach Harbaughs staff and the players on the team.
Thank you.

Michigan quote of the day

“It was really fun. All of us hung out all day, every day and it was really good for us to do that. I got lit up in paintball (laughs). Before, we didn’t know if anyone was going to be shy. But when everyone got there, we all had fun.”
