Newsstand: Michigan football coach Sherrone Moore talks to hockey team before Frozen Four

The Michigan hockey team arrived Wednesday in Saint Paul, Minn., for the Frozen Four, set to take on Boston College Thursday night at 7:30 p.m. ET. Before the group left, they received a message from head football coach Sherrone Moore.
“We’ve been here two years in a row. So that’s what it’s all about,” senior forward Philippe LaPointe said. “And just kind of controlling those emotions through those momentum swings and staying even-keeled.
“Then before we left, Moore came in and talked to the team, the new head coach, and kind of gave us his perspective on his championship this year. And it fired the boys up. And it was awesome for him to do that for all of us and just thankful for that.”
“Yeah, we spent time with him as a staff and we had a really good talk,” Michigan head coach Brandon Naurato added. “And then he asked if he could come talk to the players, too. It was quick, simple stuff, but stuff that matters.
“If you haven’t been here before you wouldn’t appreciate his messaging, but it was really good. It’s just a business approach. We’re here like any other road trip all year. We’re not walking around the town, like, just happy to be here. We’ve got a job to do, and we’re ready to do it.”
An NFL scout provided some insight on Michigan quarterback prospect J.J. McCarthy.
Ohio State transfer Roddy Gayle Jr. is working on setting visits with Michigan and Georgia, he told CBS Sports insider Jon Rothstein. The 6-foot-4, 210-pounder ranked third on the Buckeyes with 13.4 points per game last season. He added 4.6 rebounds and 3.1 assists in 30.9 minutes per game, appearing in 36 outings with 35 starts.
Morehead State point guard transfer Drew Thelwell also plans to ste up a visit to Michigan, his agent told On3’s Joe Tipton. The 6-foot-3, 195-pounder played four seasons at Morehead State and has one year of eligibility remaining. He entered the NCAA transfer portal March 25. The Orlando, Fla., native is the winningest player in Morehead State program history with 94 victories.
Thelwell averaged 10 points, 6.2 rebounds and 3 rebounds in 34.4 minutes per game while starting all 34 contests in which he appeared. He shot 51.6 percent on twos (64-of-124) and 33.8 percent on threes (46-of-136), adding a 66.2-percent clip at the foul line.
