Game 3 of the Super Regional between Tennessee and Southern Miss, which was delayed due to weather in the area, will officially begin at 10:06 p.m. ET, the Volunteers announced on Twitter. The game will be moved to ESPNU after being originally expected to start at 6 p.m. ET on ESPN2.
Hattiesburg is currently experiencing thunderstorms that are expected to continue over the next few hours. However, there is hope that the area will be clear enough to begin play this evening rather than push the game back again. There is at least a 40% chance of rain all the way until 10 p.m. ET according to weather forecasts.
This isn’t the time that weather has delayed the Super Regional series between Tennessee and Southern Miss. The Vols and Golden Eagles were only able to complete four innings of action as lightning twice delayed the opening game Saturday. They ultimately postponed the game until the next day after the second delay in the bottom of the fifth with Southern Miss up 4-0.
Once play resumed on Sunday, the Golden Eagles held on for the 5-3 victory. Then the teams geared up for Game 2, which Tennessee won 8-4 to force a Game 3.
Tennessee uses massive sixth inning to beat Southern Miss in Game 2, force Game 3
It appeared at the start of Game 2 on Sunday that Southern Miss was on its way to completing the sweep. The Golden Eagles took a 4-0 lead after a three-RBI home run from Christopher Sargent in the third inning, but the Vols were ready with a quick answer.
Tennessee went on to score six runs of its own in the top of the fourth to take the lead for good. Griffin Merrit got the scoring started with an RBI single before Blake Burke hit a home run to bring in two more scores. Finally, Jaredy Dickey‘s two-RBI single gave the Volunteers an advantage, and they added one more run after a fielding error from the Golden Eagles.
From there, the defense tightened up as Tennessee allowed only one more hit over the final six innings and Southern Miss never scored again. Chase Dollander finished the game with the win after pitching the first eight innings to end with seven strikeouts.
That kept the Vols’ season alive, and now they have a chance to make the College World Series for just the sixth time in program history once Monday’s game gets underway.
