Following three commitments last Sunday, Penn State fans have high expectations now for the second of four major recruiting weekends in the month of June. Head coach James Franklin and everyone inside the Lasch Building have their hands full this weekend, with 20 official visitors confirmed to be on campus. That’ll be the biggest of any weekend this month.
Of those prospects, 13 players are already committed to the Lions. Making sure they have an excellent experience is just as important as those they’re still trying to win over. For Penn State fans though, their focus is understandably on the seven prospects who are yet to announce.
Between defensive end Jamonta Waller, wide receiver Nick Marsh and safety Vaboue Toure, there’s reason to believe that the Nittany Lions could ultimately sign more than half of the uncommitted players visiting this weekend.
With that said, the one that I feel the best about currently is Philadelphia native Mylachi Williams.
A 6-foot-3, 210-pound edge rusher from Monsignor Bonner, Williams is Penn State’s top remaining prospect in Pennsylvania. Although he may rank eighth in the On3 Industry Ranking – which combines the ratings of On3, 247, Rivals and ESPN – Williams is ranked No. 3 overall in the state by On3 specifically. That’s similar to how Penn State’s coaches look at him. We’ve been told repeatedly that Williams rates similary to current commits Cooper Cousins and Quinton Martin on PSU’s recruiting board.
Recruiting: Who are Penn State’s most important visitors this upcoming weekend?
After checking in with sources, I believe the Nittany Lions are the team to beat with Williams coming into the visit. Because of that, I’m logging a new pick for Penn State in On3’s Recruiting Prediction Machine Saturday.
The Nittany Lions were the first Power Five program to offer Williams during an unofficial visit on Jan. 14. By the time visits resumed in March, nearly 20 additional schools had followed Penn State’s lead, including Georgia, Notre Dame, Pitt, Rutgers, Syracuse, Tennessee and Texas A&M.
Penn State hosted Williams for one more unofficial visit in March, while Notre Dame, Pitt, Rutgers, Syracuse and West Virginia all got him on campus for one unoffiical visit each. Pitt and Syracuse are currently scheduled to host him for an official visit next weekend.
During his junior season, Williams totaled 68 tackles, including 28 tackles for loss and 12 sacks. Penn State currently has one defensive lineman committed in Maryland native Xavier Gilliam. The Wilde Lake prospect could play either inside at tackle or off the edge.
PSU is also hosting two other defensive ends this weekend in Texas native Nigel Smith, as well as Waller. Smith’s recruitment is expeced to last until the fall. Waller has plans to commit in August.
Tampa defesive tackle Xavier Porter is also visiting Penn State this weekend. This is his first trip to State College.
