New Orleans Saints, Pelicans release statement on ‘act of terrorism’ on Bourbon Street
The New Orleans Saints and Pelicans have released a joint statement on the “act of terrorism” that took place early Wednesday morning on Bourbon Street.
“The New Orleans Saints and New Orleans Pelicans are deeply saddened by the tragic events that occurred on Bourbon Street early on New Year’s Day,” the statement read. “Our hearts go out to all victims and their families during this difficult time, and express our deepest gratitude to the first responders who acted swiftly and bravely on the scene.
“New Orleans is a city built on resilience, and this heartbreaking event reminds us of the importance of coming together to support one another, to honor those affected, and to work toward healing as a community. In times of tragedy, the New Orleans community has always shown extraordinary courage and compassion, and we are certain that this time will be no different.”
2025 Sugar Bowl scheduled to go on amid New Orleans shooting on Bourbon Street
10 people were killed and 30 injured after a vehicle drove into a crowd on Canal and Bourbon Street, according to the Associated Press. The incident occurred toward the end of New Year’s celebrations, at 3:15 a.m. in New Orleans. It was noted that the injured have been taken to five local hospitals, and the FBI is investigating. New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell has called it a “terrorist attack.”
The 2025 Sugar Bowl is still scheduled to kick off on time tonight at 7:45 p.m. CT at the Caesars Superdome. Georgia and Notre Dame go head-to-head in the College Football Playoff quarterfinal matchup, with the winner taking on Penn State in the semifinals.
“Authorities are conducting a sweep of the Superdome as a precaution,” Ross Dellenger of Yahoo Sports wrote on X. “The Sugar Bowl is still on schedule to be played tonight, as the New Orleans police chief suggested this morning. Officials are expected to hold their next briefing at 1 p.m. CT.”
Irish Illustrated also relayed a local news report that postponement of the game could be in play due to a search for explosive devices. Nothing is currently set in stone.
