Nebraska Women’s Basketball posts gritty win over Oregon in overtime

Nebraska Women’s Basketball (18-9, 9-7) dominated in the fourth quarter to come back from a 10-point deficit and defeat Oregon (18-9, 9-7) 94-90 in overtime at Pinnacle Bank Arena in Lincoln, Neb.

Center Alexis Markowski recorded her 51st career double-double. She scored a career-high 34 points and earned 14 rebounds. The senior center went 6-of-9 from three. Logan Nissley added a career-high 16 points and was 5-of-9 from behind the arc. Alberte Rimdal added 15 points. Callin Hake ran the point, scoring 17 points and had seven assists.

The Huskers went 12-of-29 from three and shot 45.3 percent from field goal range. Oregon shot 49.3 from the field and was 12-of-27 from behind the arc. Nebraska went 8-of-8 from three in the fourth and overtime period to win.

Deja Kelly led Oregon with 22 points. Nani Falatea was 6-of-8 from behind the arc for 20 points. Five Ducks scored in double-digits.

The Huskers were without freshman point guard Britt Prince. Prince, who averages 12.9 points and 4.4 rebounds per game, was out with a lower leg injury. She suffered the injury against Illinois and was wearing a boot on her right foot on the sideline vs. Oregon.

Nebraska Battles Back After Early Deficit Against Oregon

The Ducks scored 10 points in the first two minutes to take a 10-0 lead. Nebraska went scoreless for three and a half minutes until Markowski hit back-to-back 3-pointers.

The 3-pointers helped Nebraska get back in the game. They went 4-of-7 from behind the arc in the first quarter. Markowski was 2-of-2 from three and didn’t score in the paint.

Callin Hake drained a three and then drove down after a steal for a fastbreak layup. She helped Nebraska tie the game 18-18 with 47 seconds left. The Huskers forced a shot-clock violation on Oregon’s next possession.

Nebraska started the second quarter with a 10-3 run to take a 28-21. Nissley made two 3-pointers in the run to force an Oregon timeout.

The Ducks regroup well during their timeout. They responded with back-to-back 3-pointers from Elisa Mevius and Peyton Scott. Oregon went on an 11-2 run over the next 73 seconds.

Nebraska continued to battle with a Nissley 3-pointer and three buckets inside. The Huskers recorded 12 paint points in the second quarter after six in the first quarter. NU also won the rebound battle 25-14 in the first half.

Huskers surge in fourth quarter

The Ducks were on fire in the third quarter. They outscored Nebraska 28-17 in the third quarter. They shot 57.9 percent from the field.

Kelly earned seven third-quarter points. Falatea went 3-of-4 from behind the arc in quarter three.

Nebraska committed six turnovers with three in a 1:18 time span. Oregon capitalized with eight points off turnovers in the third quarter. NU went nearly four minutes without a field goal. The Huskers were 0-of-4 in the third quarter.

NU started the fourth quarter with five straight points. Markowski drained Nebraska’s first 3-pointer in 16 minutes, cutting Oregon’s lead to 67-62.

Markowski scored 11 straight Nebraska points to tie the game 70-70. She scored 16 points and was 3-of-3 from three in the fourth quarter.

Kelly (6) and Kyei (5) kept Oregon in it as the duo scored 11 of the Ducks’ 14 fourth-quarter points. Falatea was the third Duck to score in the fourth quarter. She hit a huge 3-pointer with 37 left to take a 81-78 lead.

The Huskers outscored Oregon 24-14 in the fourth quarter to come back from a 10-point deficit.

Husker 3-pointers, defense win OT

Rimdal and Markowski hit 3-pointers for Nebraska’s first two buckets of overtime. The Huskers took an 87-84 lead after Markowski’s shot from deep.

Hake drained a three of her own with 57 seconds left in the extra period.

Oregon didn’t score a field goal for over three minutes in overtime. Kyei ended the drought with a layup and the and-one shot. She cut Nebraska’s lead to 90-88 with 44 seconds left.

After a Husker timeout, Hake hit another 3-pointer for Nebraska to take a 93-88 lead with 35 seconds left. Oregon called their final timeout immediately afterward.

Markowski’s free throw with 16 seconds left gave NU a 94-90 lead and all but secured the win.

Oregon shot 25 percent from the field in overtime

Next, Nebraska faces Washington on Senior Day on Sunday, Feb. 23, at 2 p.m. at Pinnacle Bank Arena.
