Nebraska recruiting notebook – End of summer BBQ weekend in Lincoln

Nebraska recruiting notebook – End of summer BBQ weekend in Lincoln

The Nebraska staff hosted around 30 visitors on Sunday ahead of the beginning of the dead period in August. There were several commitments in attendance, top remaining targets for Nebraska in the 2024 class, and a star studded list of 2025 players. Here is a recruiting notebook with some thoughts about the weekend:

Change of visit day format was a success

On-campus visits can be a bit of a broken record. There are tours, food, and time with coaches, players, and recruits. This weekend, some activities helped the weekend come together. The recruits were broken out into six teams and conducted a scavenger hunt which had them running all around the stadium.

While the recruits were busy with the hunt, the parents played Family Feud. There was also a session of “Name That Tune” that was also a hit. I am told that this format change should be credited to one of Matt Rhule’s most recent hires, Courtney Helom. Courtney just joined the staff in Lincoln, coming from the University of Houston, and was at the University of Texas before that.

A couple of updates to make to the visitor list

There will be some updates to the visitor list as it currently stands. The highest-rated recruit from the 2025 class, wide receiver Andrew Marsh, had travel issues getting into Nebraska for Sunday. However, it sounds like Marsh is still coming to Nebraska and will take a visit on Monday.

Additionally, Jayden Woods said he could not make it this weekend. I confirmed that Caleb Benning was in attendance on Sunday, and I have heard that he and some other recruits could be back on Monday to watch practice in Lincoln.

Landen Davidson is physically ready to play

I have heard from multiple sources that Landen Davidson was one of the recruits that really stood out this weekend. Davison, who had offers from Colorado, Iowa State, Kansas, and Washington State, is being looked at the play the IOL spot by Nebraska. He was told by the Nebraska staff that he was a ‘perfect fit’ to play inside in their offense.

Davidson came in looking like he was 275 pounds, but his actual weight was 320 pounds. Davidson has been hitting the weight room hard, supposedly this summer.

Nick Brooks should be a major target for Nebraska

So far, I have yet to be able to catch up with Nicolai Brooks today, but several accounts about Brooks indicate that he is massive and is a really good-looking recruit. Brooks would be the first person off of the bus kind of person for Nebraska potentially. I expect Nebraska to make Brooks a top target in the 2025 class. You will be hearing his name a lot in the coming months.

The OT picture for the 2024 class

Grant Brix was in Lincoln this weekend after taking trips to both Oklahoma and Kansas State. From an unofficial account, I heard someone say again that it sounds like this is really between OU and Nebraska. I give Nebraska the edge here because of location. The word is that Brix had a great visit to Nebraska this weekend, like all of his other visits, and that this will be a difficult decision.

Here is something to keep an eye on. We are trying to confirm a rumor out of this weekend about Brandon Baker. Baker, who has visited Nebraska twice before and included Nebraska in his top 10, supposedly has set up an official visit to Nebraska in September. Again, it’s not confirmed with Baker, but that is the weekend that Baker has told me before and he’s also told me that he would be taking an official visit to Nebraska during the season.
