NC State QB commit Will Wilson is ready for a ‘new era’ in Raleigh
Will Wilson spent this spring learning a new offense with Columbia (S.C.) Richland Northeast High. It’s a college-level system, in his opinion, which will prepare him to make the leap to ACC football with NC State next year.
The Wolfpack’s three-star class of 2025 quarterback commit is in the middle of spring practice, helping his team develop before the signal-caller’s final high school campaign on the gridiron. Wilson committed to NC State nearly a year ago, and he remains completely locked in with the program.
Both Will Wilson and his father Walter Wilson, who is also the head coach of Richland Northeast, have forged extremely strong bonds with the Wolfpack staff. That starts with quarterbacks coach Kurt Roper, who recently stopped by the school to sit down with them.
NC State’s quarterback commit said they are extremely close, and their most recent meeting went well. The Pack makes sure Wilson knows he is a priority, and their relationship continues to evolve as a result.
“It never changed,” Wilson said. “From the first day they started recruiting me, it just kept growing, the love kept coming and I just felt more a part of the family.”
On the field, Wilson is working on his efficiency while also expanding his football IQ. He was a team captain as a junior and plays a critical role as a leader as well.
Walter Wilson tries to separate his roles as a coach and a parent, but sometimes that’s impossible. He knows being a coach’s son is not easy, and the quarterback handles that responsibility well.
“I try not to be the father when I’m on the sideline but, every now and then, you smile inside,” Walter Wilson said. “I always say his mama did a great job.”
The elder Wilson said Will has always been prepared physically, standing 6-1, 220 pounds, and he continued to develop his mechanics this offseason. Roper is already coaching up the future Wolfpack quarterback, and both Wilsons mentioned a specific message from the NC State assistant that the signal-caller is already starting to adopt.
“One thing that coach Roper always tells him is when you take that snap, you’ve got to have a plan,” Walter Wilson said. “You can see that little more now.”
Will Wilson recently ran in the South Carolina 4A state track championships after qualifying with Richland Northeast’s 4×400-meter relay team. He completed his track season while going through spring football.
Earlier this year, Wilson and his family spent a few days in Raleigh, watching practice and the program’s spring game. That visit went extremely well and made him even more confident that he picked the right school.
“It’s a new era in Raleigh,” Will Wilson said. “Being up there for the three days, that just reassured my commitment. That showed me why I committed there.”
His parents are all-in as well. They feel like family at NC State.
“I love the Wolfpack family man,” Walter Wilson said.
The Wolfpack quarterback will be back on campus June 21-23 for an official visit. He’s looking forward to that trip and might stop by NC State earlier in the month as well.
Wilson knows in-person recruiting is more valuable than reaching out over social media. He has already started his recruiting efforts so, when he spends a weekend with a packed group of priority visitors, he can put together his full pitch for NC State.
He shared his message for potential future teammates with TheWolfpacker.com.
“Bro, NC State is going up, and we’re not we’re not stopping for anybody,” Wilson said. “Me? I’m going to do my damn best to study my film, study my plays, I’m going to get you the ball. I’m going to be that guy. Every time we step on the field, we’ve got a chance.”
Recruiting the 2025 class will be Wilson’s primary goal for that official visit weekend. He already knows the program, the staff and the facilities well enough to be comfortable as a commit.
So, is there anything else he needs to know before joining the Wolfpack?
“Nah man, I’m not too big into NIL or stuff like that…I’m going to earn everything I get,” Wilson said. “I promise you. I’m going to earn everything I get.
“The biggest thing is I’m going to try to get some guys with me. That’s going to be my big focus, just hanging around the guys and having fun in Raleigh.”
