NC State football defense: Initial PFF grades/snap counts
NC State football was able to play a total of 17 players on defense Thursday evening in East Hartford, Conn., during the 24-14 win over UConn in the season opener for both teams, according to the initial snap counts provided by Pro Football Focus (PFF). The grades for the Wolfpack players on defense were mostly, unsurprisingly, good.
Although the scores are subject to revisions upon further reviews and evaluations, the NC State defense graded out at 71.2 overall. About 64.0 is considered average. The Pack thus far owns the 14th best grade out of the 38 that played during the week and have been scored by PFF.
The coverage is a major reason for the NC State grade. The Wolfpack scored 84.2 in that department, fourth best and only behind Minnesota (90.4), Wake Forest (88.4) and UMass (84.7) among the teams that have played. Every single defensive back for NC State that played double-digit snaps had above-average marks from PFF.
Conversely, the run defense did not get a good grade, just 49.2. That is lower than any score from last year for NC State, with the lowest coming, coincidentally, against UConn as well (50.1 in 2022).
