NC State football camp notebook: Arrion Concepcion, Will Wilson updates
NC State continued its summer camp schedule Friday, June 7, welcoming a crowd of just under 200 expected prospects to Raleigh for combine testing and drills on the Wolfpack’s practice fields.
Quarterback commit Will Wilson and three-star priority wide receiver Arrion Concepcion were the headlining prospects on campus. The future Wolfpack signal-caller was the senior member of a talented group of recruits that worked out with Kurt Roper before camp began.
So far, NC State has extended one new offer from the event. TheWolfpacker.com jotted down notes throughout the camp on Wilson, Concepcion and the other standout prospects.
Arrion Concepcion impressed as his commitment approaches
Concepcion made a surprise trip to Raleigh this week for Friday’s camp. He told TheWolfpacker.com he attended the event because he just loves to compete. The three-star receiver plans on spending the night at NC State with his brother KC, so there’s a chance he will be around this weekend’s official visitors at some point as well.
The Charlotte (N.C.) Chambers High pass catcher does not have any officials scheduled for June other than his June 21-23 trip to Raleigh. He postponed his Virginia Tech visit until the fall. He told TheWolfpacker.com that he plans on making his commitment “soon.” To be clear, I would be surprised if that trip to see the Hokies happens.
NC State remains in a good spot with the receiver who measured 5-9, 164 pounds at camp. He has a great relationship with wide receivers coach Joker Phillips but actually communicates more with offensive coordinator Robert Anae these days.
Both assistants and offensive quality control coach Gavin Locklear all spent plenty of time talking to the NC State sibling legacy recruit. The Pack is recruiting him to play a wide receiver/h-back hybrid position that should take advantage of his dynamic ability in the open field.
During camp, he continued to showcase consistent improvement. TheWolfpacker.com has watched Concepcion compete in camps, high school games and 7-on-7 tournaments around 8 total times at this point.
Every time I evaluate him, it looks like he took a step forward. His hands impressed me during Friday’s camp. Catching was never a concern for the rising senior, but he made a couple of difficult grabs away from his body during camp that required impressive focus and timing.
The receiver also continued to showcase his elusiveness and was very hard to cover one-on-one. He did not do any combine testing, but the three-star recruit looked fast and quick.
Will Wilson continues to showcase sky-high potential
Wilson put on a show during Friday’s camp. He did not go through testing but looks a little taller than his listed 6-1 height, and his 220-pound weight looks accurate. Physically, the rising senior is a college-ready quarterback.
His arm talent continued to show improvement today. The ball flies out of his hand. NC State measured quarterback throwing velocity at camp, and the buzz around camp was he clocked a 56 mph throw. For comparison’s sake, the top quarterbacks at the 2023 NFL combine recorded speeds between 59-62 mph.
It’s tough to gauge accuracy at times during these camps where the receivers have no chemistry with the people throwing the ball, but Wilson went through a workout with Concepcion, and they were already clicking at a high level. It was easy to envision that connection at NC State.
His potential is sky-high. One current member of the Wolfpack even remarked on how great he looked at camp. NC State did a good job making him feel like a priority while on campus too. Head coach Dave Doeren stopped by his workout with Roper to say hi to the quarterback and his family. Wilson also had plenty of conversations with Anae while on campus.
Langston Hogg holds Wolfpack in high regard
Langston Hogg returned to NC State this week after visiting for spring practice as well. The three-star class of 2026 Cartersville (Ga.) High offensive lineman looked solid in one-on-one competition and told TheWolfpacker.com he enjoyed the camp. He said NC State is one of the early schools standing out in his recruitment alongside Oregon, Tulane and Georgia Southern.
A new quarterback offer for the Pack
Three-star class of 2026 quarterback Quinn Murphy is the only camper to report a new NC State offer so far. The Austin (TX) Liberty Christian signal-caller made the trip up to campus because Roper has visited his school twice and showed consistent interest. Murphy is definitely interested in the Wolfpack and will consider the program after picking up the scholarship. He also spent some time with Roper Thursday. The rising junior really likes the NC State quarterbacks coach.
Michigan, Miami, UNC and Baylor are a few of the schools standing out right now. He said a few programs are really pushing for a commitment from him, so a summer decision remains on the table. With that said, he will likely make a commitment after his junior season.
On the field, Murphy was probably the most accurate quarterback in attendance. He measured over 6-3 and showcased some impressive arm talent.
The signal-callers highlighted the camp
In addition to Wilson and Murphy, rising sophomore quarterback Trae Taylor also stood out Friday. The top underclassman quarterback from Lake In The Hills, Illinois, already holds a long offer list that includes NC State, Michigan and Kentucky. He has already visited campus three times this year and plans on returning at some point in the future.
