NASCAR Insider: Garage internet outage wreaking havoc at Daytona

The NASCAR Cup Series race Coke Zero Sugar 400 at Daytona is having its share of drama, including the garage area having an internet outage. Per Jeff Gluck of The Athletic, one team radio said: “Internet is down for the entire garage area, so nobody can tell what their fuel is.”

This was said after a huge wreck during the 60th lap of the race that took out multiple drivers. Earlier in the race, Daniel Suárez‘s car caught on fire, and his night ended early.

Since the race was in the second stage when the internet outage happened, drivers weren’t too concerned about their fuel levels. But if the internet in the garage area remains down throughout the race, the end of the race could be very interesting.

After the wreck at Daytona Chase Elliott reacted to being involved in the incident. “I saw smoke and I was so far in the back of the pack at that point, I was just trying to slow down and hope nobody hits me from behind,” Elliott said. “Unfortunately, neither one of those things happened. It’s a bummer, I hate it, but we were really just riding. I think everybody was just trying to get through the stage. … Definitely a bummer. I hate it for everyone involved. Obviously gonna have to go and have a really good week next week but we’ve been pretty lucky these last few plate races, so we were overdue unfortunately.”

One interesting aspect of Daytona is the lack of success for Kyle Larson. Before the Coke Zero Sugar 400, Larson explained why Daytona has been a weakneess for him over the years.

“I feel like I’m way better at it. I feel like more times than not, we’re one of the front cars there at the end of the race and still get caught up in a crash,” Larson said to Dustin Long of NBC Sports. “I’m not blaming back luck at all, I still have a lot of room to get better and making all the right decisions to keep good track position. But I do feel I’ve gotten better at it. Our team obviously studies it a lot. I feel like we do a really good job getting stage points and all that and still positioning ourselves at the end of the race.

“I feel like I’ve just been like one lazy decision or one too quick of a decision away from having really good days. Hopefully, this weekend will be a little different.”
