Mykah Newton says NC State was on its ‘A game’ during official visit
NC State was already one of Mykah Newton’s top schools going into his weekend with the Wolfpack. He spent June 7-9 in Raleigh, clicked with the current players, meshed with the staff and saw an obvious fit for him on the field.
He left campus with the Pack sitting strong alongside Michigan State and UCF, his other two contenders. The Newberry (Fla.) High lineman enjoyed the weekend at NC State and effusively praised the staff’s hospitality.
This was his second official visit after spending last week with the Spartans. NC State checked a few boxes for the priority three-star defensive end.
“It went amazing man,” Newton said. “It was cool. I loved the whole coaching staff. They showed some amazing love. I loved every single part of the visit. The area fits me, the players were cool.”
Redshirt freshman Isaiah Shirley hosted Newton, and they quickly built a bond. He sees the Wolfpack defensive end as a great role model and enjoyed hanging out with him.
Newton said they would play similar roles with the Pack, so they talked about how he could fit into NC State’s defensive line.
“Isaiah Shirley was probably one of the coolest dudes I’ve ever met,” Newton said.
After speaking with Shirley and the Wolfpack staff, he could definitely see himself playing in the Wolfpack’s scheme. NC State would utilize his versatility at 6-3, 250 pounds to play in a variety of alignments. He said that’s what NFL scouts look for, so he liked the program’s defense.
He already had a strong bond with defensive line coach Charley Wiles going into this visit because the Pack assistant visited Newberry High earlier this year. NC State offered Newton May 13 and remained consistent from there. That resonated with the lineman.
“He’s just an overall awesome guy, a down-to-earth dude, very transparent,” Newton said. “He really shows his true colors. Nothing has changed about him ever since I first met him at my school, so I really like that about coach.”
Everything from the school’s laidback environment to the food appealed to him. He said the Wolfpack “fits his vibe.” NC State’s elaborate photoshoot really stood out to priority prospect as well, and he enjoyed the overall uniqueness of the visit.
“It was always something different in a good way,” Newton said.
Head coach Dave Doeren talked to him about the defensive staff’s cohesion over the years and the program’s history of sustained success. Newton noticed how involved he was in the visit, bringing his family around to meet the visitors and spending time with everyone. He really enjoyed getting to know the head coach.
Newton plans on making his decision before his senior season, but he has not locked in a commitment timeline yet. He thinks highly of the Wolfpack because of its history developing defensive linemen, and this visit helped reinforce the program as a ton contender in his recruitment.
“They helped themselves a lot,” Newton said. “They always were in a good spot for me due to the fact how they produce a lot of defensive linemen.”
He attends the same school as former Wolfpack All-ACC standout Cory Durden. Newton watched the nose tackle develop into an NFL player at NC State, and that left an impression.
Coming out of this visit, there’s nothing else he needs to learn about the program.
“They hit on everything, I’ll keep it real,” Newton said. “They were on their A game this weekend. They were on their A game.”
