Missouri transfer LB Mikai Gbayor commits to North Carolina

Missouri linebacker transfer Mikai Gbayor committed to North Carolina out of the NCAA transfer portal, according to On3’s Hayes Fawcett. He originally left Nebraska for Missouri back in December.

Gbayor was a starter for the Cornhuskers, and totaled 73 tackles, three pass breakups and 1.5 sacks across two seasons. He will have two years of eligibility remaining.

During the 2024 season, he played in all 12 regular season games for Nebraska and totaled 49 total tackles (20 solo), a sack, three PBU’s two fumble recoveries.

Before college, the Irvington, NJ native was a three-star recruit out of the 2021 recruiting class, per the On3 Industry Rankings, which is a proprietary algorithm that compiles ratings and rankings from all four primary recruiting media services.

Gbayor isn’t the only Tigers defender that has recently entered the NCAA transfer portal. EDGE Jahkai Lang revealed his plan to enter the portal, he told On3’s Hayes Fawcett. Lang spent two seasons in Columbia.

The 6-foot-3, 250-pound defender redshirted during his first season with the Tigers, failing to appear in any games. He was a bit more involved as a second-year player in 2024. During his time with Missouri, Lang recorded 13 tackles, 3.0 tackles for a loss and 3.0 sacks during his first season of playing action in 2024. He played in 12 games for the Tigers.

Missouri finished the 2024 season with a 10-3 record, including a 5-3 record against SEC competition which earned the Tigers tied for fourth-place in the final conference standings at the end of the year. This came after an 11-win season that was capped off with a victory over Ohio State in the postseason. It remains to be seen if the Tigers will find themselves back near the top of the SEC in 2025.
