Mississippi State offensive lineman Malik Ellis enters NCAA transfer portal

Mississippi State offensive lineman Malik Ellis has entered the NCAA transfer portal, On3 has learned. He did so after spending two seasons with the Bulldogs.
Ellis originally appeared in 11 games during the 2023 season, starting four of them as a true freshman. However, he saw his usage diminish considerably the following year.
In 2024, as a second-year player, Malik Elllis played in only one game, taking a redshirt. He then hit the NCAA transfer portal, set to seek a fresh opportunity elsewhere.
Prior to enrolling at Mississippi State, Ellis was viewed as a high-quality recruit on the offensive line. He checked in as a three-star prospect and the No. 767 overall player in the nation in the 2023 recruiting class, according to the On3 Industry Rankings.
In addition, Malik Ellis was tabbed the No. 49 offensive tackle in his class. He was also named the No. 18 overall player in the state of Mississippi, hailing from Laurel (MS) Laurel.
Mississippi State loses a QB to the portal
In addition to Malik Ellis heading to the transfer portal, Mississippi State is also expected to lose another key contributor. Senior quarterback Jake Weir has entered the NCAA transfer portal, according to On3’s Pete Nakos.
The Tupelo native will have one year of collegiate eligibility remaining. Weir, a former walk-on, enters the transfer portal without any collegiate stats or participation in three seasons in Starkville.
With former Baylor transfer Blake Shapen the expected starter and Mississippi State adding former Florida State standout Luke Kromenhoek and Austin Peay transfer Chris Parson out of the portal in the Winter, Weir’s road to playing time in 2025 was cloudy at best.
According to his Mississippi State profile, Weir was a three-star prospect according to Rivals but opted for a preferred walk-on opportunity over offers from Southern Illinois and Tennessee-Martin. Weir threw for 3,567 yards and 29 touchdowns over his final two seasons in Tupelo, including a pair of rushing scores.
On3’s Alex Byington also contributed to this report.
