Mississippi DL transfer visited UM as a recruit, has prior relationship with Cristobal and Hurricanes are pushing: “I am looking at Miami”
Why Florida transfer WR Xzavier Henderson makes sense for Miami Hurricanes … Why Oklahoma CB transfer Jaden Davis makes sense for Miami Hurricanes
There are plenty of portal options out there, and the Miami Hurricanes are continuing to work to find the pieces that best fit into the program.
Along with guys that might make sense for Miami and vice versa like Florida WR Xzavier Henderson (who is from Miami), Oklahoma CB Jaden Davis (out of Ft. Lauderdale) and DII WR JaQuae Jackson (visited Miami already, Canes believed to be in a good spot), another name to monitor moving forward is out of Mississippi.
That’s DL Tywone Malone, a 6-4, 315-pound marvel who perhaps can be described as a defensive Bo Jackson. In addition to playing football at Ole Miss he also is on the baseball team and can hit the ball as hard as he hits opposing running backs (he has a home run in 10 at-bats this season).
Malone visited Miami as a recruit in the Class of 2018 and was also recruited by Mario Cristobal to Oregon when he was in high school. After entering the portal, the relationship with Cristobal was rekindled.
“I am looking at Miami, we’ve been talking,” Malone told CaneSport. “I’ve been down there (as a recruit), know coach Cristobal and he’s a cool dude. Miami, they definitely are interested in me, we’ve been talking and they just told me where they see me fitting into their program, how I can help the program out.”
Malone is an athletic tackle who also is quick enough to set the edge as a DE run stopper if needed there. He says that his transfer recruitment “is still open, I’m looking around, seeing what people have to offer.”
He says there’s no “precise number” of schools he’s considering, and says that he is in no rush to announce a decision.
“I’m finishing up my classes, plan to decide after that,” Malone said.
He says he’s unsure if he will or would need to take a visit for Miami if he were to wind up a Hurricane.
“I’ve been down there and seen it (as a high school recruit),” Malone said. “But I might visit again.”
He says there are no upcoming visits set, and says he would also like to play baseball at his future school of choice.
“It’s a process,” Malone said. “We’ll see what happens.”
After redshirting in 2021 as a four-star signee he had 10 tackles and a sack last season off the bench. In 97 reps he graded out at 68.5 overall per Pro Football Focus. That included a 69.4 run defense grade, 80.8 tackle grade and 61.8 pass rush grade (70 is considered a good grade).
CaneSport’s Take
Malone would be a nice addition to a Miami defensive tackle spot that lacks quality depth, with Leonard Taylor the only proven standout and a pair of transfers already coming in prior the spring in Branson Deen and Thomas Gore. But neither has the size and physicality of Malone.
