Mike Norvell shares positive thoughts on Florida State offensive line

Through the early portion of fall camp, coach Mike Norvell had been pretty pleased with the Florida State offensive line.
The unit was quite good a year ago, paving the way for the nation’s 14th-ranked rushing attack. Norvell wants to be able to build on that this fall as the team targets a College Football Playoff berth.
“I think for where we are it’s been pretty good,” Norvell said of the O-line. “You see talent, you see ability. We’ve got to continue to work consistency, and that’s sometimes challenging when you’re rolling a lot and getting different guys.”
Creating quality depth has been a big focus for the Florida State offensive line early in fall camp, which requires getting a lot of players snaps. So there have been plenty rotating through the various units.
Eventually the team will hone in on a few starters and a few key backups and progress from there.
That doesn’t need to happen right away, though.
“We’ve got 25 practices to prepare for the first game and trying to be aggressive here early with guys understanding the importance of communication, understanding how they need to work together,” Norvell said. “Once we get to game prep we’re going to lock in pretty good on who’s going where and make sure we have that confidence in the work.”
That game prep will be pivotal, of course. Florida State opens up with a top-10 matchup against LSU on Sept. 3. There’s a lot of momentum up for grabs for both programs; a win would seriously boost the confidence and the overall profile of the team.
The Florida State offensive line will need to be on point against an aggressive LSU front seven, led by sophomore sensation at linebacker Harold Perkins.
But Florida State isn’t in game prep mode just yet.
“The flip side of it, right now we’re trying to create as many challenges as we can and I think they’re handling it well,” Norvell said. “Big, physical, you see the athletic ability, and I definitely like what I’m seeing.”
