Mike Norvell discusses ‘great opportunity’ Florida State has to open 2024 season in Ireland

Florida State will open the season with a neutral site game for the third consecutive year in 2024, after facing LSU in New Orleans and Orlando in back-to-back years leading up to that point.
The 2024 opener will have a much different feel from the other two. The Seminoles are set to face Georgia Tech in Ireland next season, with the game to be played at Aviva Stadium in Dublin on Aug. 24, 2024.
Seminoles head coach Mike Norvell spoke about his team having the opportunity to play in another country to open the 2024 season at the ACC Football Kickoff event last month.
“That’s something that being a year in advance, a lot of things logistically we had to look at in making that decision,” Norvell said. “It’s going to be an incredible opportunity for our team.”
Novell called the trip a “once-in-a-lifetime” opportunity in a release after the game was announced, and it truly will be. This will be the first international game in program history for the Seminoles.
Florida State isn’t just going to Ireland for a 60-minute game, though. The Seminoles will arrive early and learn some about the country, too.
“It’s something that also worked out to where we’ll have an educational experience that we’ll be able to have,” Norvell said. “There’s a lot of work between now and then, but we’re definitely fortunate for that opportunity and have got a great plan surrounding that for the 2024 season.”
Breaking down the 2023 Florida State season using the over/under
Before worrying about the 2024 season opener, Florida State has the entire 2023 season to play.
There is plenty of excitement around Mike Norvell’s program heading into the year as FSU returns a ton of talent and also brought in some difference makers from the transfer portal.
On3’s Andy Staples and J.D. PicKell recently broke down whether or not they think the Seminoles exceed or fall short of the 9.5-win over/under mark that has been set by Vegas.
“So I really like the way they’re built and I don’t think they’re going to be a team that gets caught with like the deer in the headlights syndrome. Like sometimes you see these numbers and it’s a talented roster but a lot of it’s unproven. I think Florida State over 9.5 is the way I’m going on this one,” PicKell said.
Both Staples and PicKell highlighted some of the transfers Florida State brought in as reasons for their optimism.
On top of returning quarterback Jordan Travis and wideout Johnny Wilson, the Seminoles added wide receiver Keon Coleman and tight end Jaheim Bell in the transfer portal.
With a deep, talented group, Staples is with PicKell on the over. That would mean a 10-win season for the Seminoles and, likely, a trip to the ACC Championship Game.
“So I am gonna take the over for Florida State. Double-digit wins. I realize this is double-digit regular season wins. That means they’re in Charlotte,” Staples said. “I think that feels perfectly reasonable for this team. We heard Mike Norvell on the show this week, JD, and very confident. You think about all that this veteran group has been through and then they’ve added pieces like Keon Coleman, like Jaheim Bell to it. It feels like there’s a little more margin for error for them.”
