Mike Norvell details Florida State’s place in ACC revenue tensions

ACC spring meetings come to a close Wednesday as the conference’s top coaches, administrators, and decision-makers met at Amelia Island, Florida to discuss the future of the conference. Revenue distribution has been a hot topic for the ACC in this year’s meetings, as schools like Florida State and others are pushing for a new revenue sharing model. And on Tuesday, Seminoles head coach Mike Norvell gave an update on how those conversations have been fairing.

“I think everybody sees where we are, we’re all looking to where we’re going,” Norvell said. “We always want to continue to grow, you want to continue to build, you want to make sure you’re maximizing the potential that we all have.”

Schools like Florida State, Clemson, and Miami are pushing for unequal revenue distribution that would award the bigger name programs and brands with more money than others in the conference for bringing in a bulk of TV viewership.

Florida State was also one of seven schools in the conference that have been reportedly exploring options with the Grant of Rights, meeting with lawyers to determine the strength of their deal with the ACC. But Norvell insists that the school and the conference are still on good terms.

“I think you look at the relationship Florida State has with the ACC, it is a great relationship, there’s a great history. I know that there’s things that we’re all doing just trying to continue to build the brand of Florida State football, our athletics department as a whole. Same with the ACC and all things moving forward,” Norvell said.

Allocating more money for the conference’s top teams and breadwinners could potentially have a negative impact on the competition across the ACC, making the stronger schools even stronger and widening the gap between the top teams and the bottom.

But more funding for the top programs could also help the conference create more revenue in an effort to bridge the $30 million gap between SEC and Big Ten conferences and the ACC.

There’s no doubt that there’s a challenging balance that ACC Commissioner James Phillips is being tasked with maintaining, but there’s also no doubt that schools like Florida State will continue to keep pushing for an increase in revenue.

“So I think our administration has done a really good job in helping push and provide a lot of things that are necessary, we’re going to continue to push to make sure that we’re staying among the nation’s elite and how we operate,” Norvell explained. “That’s a challenge for all of us, administration, conference, we’re all in the same journey trying to grow and get better.”
