Michigan WR commit Channing Goodwin on enrolling early, expectations for U-M’s season

Michigan picked up a commitment from three-star Charlotte (N.C.) Providence Day wide receiver Channing Goodwin in early May.

A legacy recruit, Goodwin is the son of ex-Wolverine offensive lineman Jonathan Goodwin. However, Channing wanted to make his own decision and took his time with the process. Since his verbal pledge, Goodwin has remained locked in with U-M and is still happy with his pick.

“Just the relationships I’ve build have me excited about my commitment,” Goodwin said. “I really feel like it’s the place I need to be. I love everything about Michigan. I can’t wait to get up there. Coach (Ron) Bellamy has been helping me and giving me a few pointers. That relationship is great.”

Goodwin isn’t the only Providence Day prospect committed to Michigan this cycle. Top 100 quarterback Jadyn Davis will be joining him in Ann Arbor, and the two are continuing to build their connection.

“Our connection is growing,” Goodwin said. “It’s been great. This is our second year. We started off a little slow (in the first game), but we picked it up towards the end. The connection is great. I’m sure it’ll keep improving.”

Both Davis and Goodwin are set to enroll early at Michigan. Goodwin believes getting a head start will only help with his development.

“I’m looking forward to it,” Goodwin said. “I actually had to take some summer classes, so it took away from my summer. But I’m really excited about it. Hopefully, I’ll be able to get some bowl practice in with the team. Semaj (Morgan) and Fred (Moore) did it, and I think it’s helped them. Seeing how the older guys like JJ (McCarthy) and Blake (Corum) operate will be big.”

For now, Goodwin plans on watching every Michigan game this season and has high expectations for the team.

“The team has been saying it, so I’ll say natty or bust,” Goodwin said. “I’m not on the team yet, but that’s my expectation if it’s theirs. I’m excited to see some of the younger guys like Darrius Clemons and Tyler Morris. I’m looking to maybe get back for the ECU game and definitely for Ohio State.”

On the recruiting front, Goodwin is still working on a pair of teammates — North Carolina wide receiver commit Jordan Shipp and five-star 2025 offensive tackle David Sanders.

“We’re recruiting David a lot,” Goodwin said. “We’re also going to work on Jordan until signing day. Michigan has great offensive line play, so it would be great to get David. Joran is trying to stay home, but I’m working on it.”

At 6-foot-1, 175 pounds, Goodwin is ranked as the No. 82 wide receiver and No. 486 overall prospect nationally, per the On3 Industry Ranking.
