Michigan State welcomed three-star wide receiver Javarius Green to campus for an official visit over the weekend (June 9-11). It was the Shelby (NC) receiver’s first trip to East Lansing. He released a top seven including MSU, North Carolina, Virginia Tech, NC State, Maryland, Virginia, Vanderbilt back on May 13. He was then offered by Alabama on June 1. Green will officially visit North Carolina on June 23. He is currently undecided about the weekend of June 16.
Wide receivers coach Courtney Hawkins and Michigan State have been recruiting Green since offering in January, immediately catching his eye. Hawkins and the Spartans made a strong first in person impression over the weekend.
“This was my first time up to East Lansing so it was a new experience but I definitely loved it up here,” Green told SpartanMag.com. “Even though it’s a little far from North Carolina, Coach (Mel) Tucker, Coach Hawkins, Coach (Tino) Smith and the whole staff really made me feel at home here. East Lansing definitely a place I could see myself at.”
“They all showed love the whole weekend along with the players. I got to spend a lot of time with them whether it was the receivers, tight ends, quarterbacks, even some of the defensive players. I definitely felt comfortable around all those guys.”
Green credited Michigan State class of 2022 recruits Jaron Glover and Dillion Tatum, along with class of 2020 recruits, Sebastian Brown and Maliq Carr for hosting his visit.
“I had a great time hanging with those guys, experiencing East Lansing and just seeing how things flow up there,” Green said. “I was definitely comfortable around all those guys and I fit in well. It was easy to tell how they answered any questions I had and just how they carried themselves that the program does a good job developing, not only as players but as men too.”
Throughout the weekend there were several activities planned for the recruits. Friday evening consisted of a trip to Spartan Stadium, along with much more. Saturday night the recruits topped off the day with dinner at the Tucker household.
“The activities were great,” Green said. “They definitely helped connect with the players and coaches more which of course contributed to that home feeling. We did the stadium cookout Saturday afternoon. They had all types of games out there with the players and coaches.”
Green played pool against the other recruits along with Michigan State players and special teams coordinator Ross Els. The wide receiver claims he walked away undefeated.
“Then we went to Coach Tucks house on Saturday night and had dinner there too, I’m still 6-0 on that pool table,” Green laughed. “It was definitely cool seeing that side of them. That helps being able to connect with them like that and shows they treat their players well. Them having cookouts at Coach Tucks house on a regular basis (for example).”
Before leaving campus Green and his family sat down with head coach Mel Tucker. They also met with Courtney Hawkins one on one on Saturday.
“We had a personal meeting with Coach Tucker before we left, and we had personal meetings during the day Saturday with Coach Hawkins,” Green said.
“It was definitely good to sit down with him,” Green said of Hawkins. “We had met in person before when he visited my school so the relationship was already there but this weekend definitely strengthened that relationship. We got to learn more about each other and actually be around each other.”
The exit meeting with Mel Tucker also stood out to the North Carolina receiver.
“My parents and I sat down is his office for about 30 mins before departed,” Green said “He let us know that they really would love to have me and my skill set up in East Lansing. They think I fit the program very well, not only as a football player, but also how I carry myself outside of football.”
Tucker answered the families questions leaving Green and his parents satisfied with the meeting and heavily considering the Spartans going forward.
“He also just answered any other questions we had left about the program or anything,” Green said. ”Just talking with us, telling us more about the program. It was easy to tell throughout the whole weekend that Coach Tuck is a players coach. You can see all the players are happy there. They are well taken care of. That is something that means a lot for me going into my final decision.”
The 6-foot-1 receiver posted impressive numbers during his junior season. Green hauled in 61 passes for 1,344 receiving yards and 18 touchdowns. He also scored three more touchdowns with on the ground, running for roughly 600 yards.
Green is ranked a three star, the No. 680 overall recruit. He is ranked the No. 99 wide receiver, and the No. 17 recruit in North Carolina by the 2024 On3 Consensus.
