Michigan State to host Northwestern transfer linebacker Nigel Glover this week

Michigan State will host former Northwestern freshman linebacker Nigel Glover for Spartan Dawg Con on July 27-29, he tells SpartanMag.com.

The event consists of gathering a large contingent of former players and their families, along with the current team and high school recruits on campus. In the previous two years, hundreds of former players made their way back to East Lansing. Spartan coaches also host recruits and their families, with previous years activities involving a scavenger hunt around campus, a barbecue, and other unique activities.

Glover entered the transfer portal earlier this month, after the firing of former Northwestern head coach Pat Fitzgerald. The 6-foot-3, 215-pounder was the highest ranked member of the 2024 Northwestern recruiting class, the highest-rated class during Fitzgerald’s tenure.

Glover was ranked a four-star and the No. 306 overall recruit, according to the 2023 On3 Industry Rankings. Glover was also ranked the No. 31 linebacker and the No. 10 recruit in Ohio.

Michigan and Kentucky are two other schools involved in the transfer portal recruitment. He will begin a visit to Kentucky on July 25. The linebacker will also visit Michigan on July 30.

Washington, Iowa, Minnesota, Illinois, Pittsburgh, and others offered Glover out of high school.

THE FIT

Glover would supplement the depth Michigan State linebacker room, which is in need of future reinforcements at the moment. It would be hard to imagine Glover making significant impact during the 2023 season, if he were to pick the Spartans. Although, he would provide depth alongside current freshman Jordan Hall, the lone linebacker signed in the 2023 class.

In the Class of 2022, Michigan State also signed just one linebacker in Quavian Carter. Carter has been hampered with injury since arriving in East Lansing, still hoping to crack the playing group. Class of 2021 four-star linebacker Ma’a Gaoteote remains with the program and is entering his junior season.

The Spartans do not hold a linebacker commitment yet in the 2024 class as they will look to sign one to two.

Michigan State will graduate linebackers Aaron Brule and Jacoby Windmon in 2023. Glover would join Hall, Gaoteote, and Carter in adding depth during the 2023 season. Linebackers Darius Snow and Cal Haladay will likely return to East Lansing for the 2024 season.

Michigan State also added redshirt freshman Aaron Alexander from UMass via the transfer portal this off-season.
