Michigan State names three captains for opener with CMU

Defensive tackle Simeon Barrow, wide receiver Tre Mosley, and linebacker Jacoby Windmon were named team captains for the Michigan State football opener against CMU on Friday night at Spartan Stadium. Selection of the trio as captains for Week 1 was announced on social media on Wednesday afternoon.

Proven veterans, Barrow, Mosley, and Windmon were among seven Spartans named to the Reese’s Senior Bowl watch list earlier in the week along with offensive tackle Spencer Brown, linebacker Aaron Brule, center Nick Samac, and tight end Maliq Carr.

Barrow (6-3, 290, Jr., Grovetown, GA, Grovetown) is leader of the Michigan State defensive line. An honorable mention All-Big Ten selection by coaches and media last season, Barrow recorded 40 tackles, 9.0 tackles for loss, and 4.0 sacks in 537 snaps as a sophomore.

Barrow was singled out as the most disruptive player on the Spartan defense during training camp by Spartan offensive line coach Chris Kapilovic earlier this month.

“No. 8, Barrow, is having an unbelievable camp,” said Kapilovic. “I am very impressed with him. He is very disruptive.”

Windmon (6-2, 250, Sr., New Orleans, LA, John Ehret), a second-year transfer who made a major impact in eight starts last season, led Michigan State in tackles for loss (10.5) and sacks (5.5). The former UNLV standout also led the FBS in forced fumbles with six.

Windmon signed with Michigan State as a linebacker following the 2021 season. He moved to defensive end during training camp prior to the 2022 season before moving back to linebacker prior to a Michigan State victory over Wisconsin in late October. After distinguishing himself as a starter at linebacker against the Badgers, Windmon earned a second start at linebacker one game later against Michigan. His involvement in the post-game tunnel incident at Michigan led to his suspension for the final month of the 2022 season.

“You don’t know how much you love something until it’s taken away from you,” said Windmon, earlier this month. “When football was taken away from me, for those last four games, I felt a big void inside of me because I have such a passion for the game, but I was able to learn from it and move forward.”

Mosley (6-2, 200, Sr., Pontiac, MI, West Bloomfield) is Michigan State’s most experienced wide receiver with 98 receptions, 21 starts, 1,176 yards and eight touchdown catches. As a senior, Mosley has taken on a leadership role not only at the wide receiver position, but for the entire Spartan offense.

“We’ve challenged Tre to speak a little bit more and get out in front of the team because he does everything right,” said wide receivers coach Courtney Hawkins earlier this week. “I’d love to have 10 Tre Mosley’s in the room. He has taken that leadership role. In the past you had J-Reed. You had Speedy (Nailor), so he kind of deferred.

“He’s the elder statesman. The guys listen to him and he helps to drive the culture in the room and the culture on our team. He has the opportunity to make some plays and for us to be as good as I think we can be, he needs to be consistent and make some plays for us.”

Each of Michigan State’s Week 1 captains deserves the honor. Chances are, however, Friday’s opener will not be the only time that Barrow, Mosley, and Windmon serve in the role of game week captain this season.
