Michigan State loses 2025 RB commit Jace Clarizio to Alabama

Michigan State’s 2025 recruiting class took a big blow on Tuesday, as running back Jace Clarizio announced his intentions to de-commit from the Spartans and flip to Alabama.

Clarizio had been a member of the Spartan class since May. The East Lansing native had made countless visits to East Lansing over the previous calendar year.

The decommitment stings a little bit extra as Clarizio is a Michigan State legacy, and a key member of the class. His father, Craig Johnson, played for the Spartans from 1985-88.

Despite the connections Michigan State could not overcome the late push from Alabama, as the Crimson Tide offered Clarizio in early November. The running back took an official visit to Tuscaloosa on Nov. 16 amid a busy playoff run with East Lansing High School.

Alabama running backs coach Robert Gillespie, along with offensive line coach Chris Kapilovic led the charge for the Crimson Tide.

Clarizio has had a standout fall, drawing the attention of many programs, however only the Crimson Tide had caught his eye. With his senior season now in the review mirror, he was able to take a few days to settle on a final decision. Sources tell SpartanMag.com the running back made his way to campus to let the staff know his plans in person.

The former Michigan State commit is ranked a three-star, the No. 466 overall recruit in the 2025 On3 Industry Rankings. Clarizio is also ranked the No. 35 running back and the No. 7 recruit in Michigan.

With just nine days left until early signing day, it is unlikely Michigan State will make a major push for another high school back. The Spartans received a commitment from Frankfort (IL) Lincoln-Way East running back Zion Gist on Monday. Gist took an official visit over the weekend and into Monday.
