Michigan State, DT transfer Brandon Lane mutually part ways; what it means for Spartan DT room

East Lansing, Mich. – One week after announcing his commitment to Michigan State, former Stephen F. Austin defensive tackle Brandon Lane has re-opened his portal recruitment, sources tell SpartanMag.

Lane’s agent told On3 national reporter Pete Nakos that a return to Michigan State is still on the table as he explores his options.

Lane (6-3, 300, R-Jr.) spent the previous two seasons at Stephen F. Austin, where he logged a combined 56 career tackles, 2.5 sacks and a fumble recovery. He posted 45 tackles last season. Lane also spent two seasons at South Dakota State before transferring to Stephen F. Austin.

Lane was viewed as an important addition to the Spartans’ defensive tackle room, given Derrick Harmon and Simeon Barrow‘s portal entries earlier this spring. But sources tell SpartanMag that Lane and Michigan State ultimately came to a mutual decision to part ways.

Michigan State already has plans to host former Grand Valley State defensive tackle Jay’viar Suggs on Sunday and former Old Dominion defensive tackle Jalen Satchell on May 10.

Suggs (6-2, 295, R-Jr.) has totaled 42 tackles, 14.5 tackles for loss, eight sacks, nine pass deflections and two forced fumbles over the past two seasons. Satchell (6-1, 300, R-Jr.) logged 15 tackles, one sack and one forced fumble in 11 games for the Monarchs last season.

More Michigan State transfer DT targets

Nakos reported on Thursday that Michigan State will be in the mix for former Oregon defensive tackle Ben Roberts, who entered the portal on Wednesday.

Roberts (6-2, 310, R-So.) has logged five tackles over the past two seasons. He has played 82 defensive snaps in 10 career games.

Nakos also reported on Thursday that Harmon has yet to rule out a return to Michigan State. The Detroit native has been in communication with Michigan State’s coaching staff this week. Harmon, who has already entered the portal and returned to East Lansing once this offseason, is also considering Colorado, Ohio State, Oregon and USC, per Nakos.

Harmon has visited Colorado and USC this spring. He visited Ohio State and Oregon during his first stay in the portal. Harmon canceled his previously-scheduled spring visit to Miami, which removed the Hurricanes from his recruitment.

Barrow, meanwhile, has already visited LSU, Missouri and Miami this spring. Texas might also look to get involved in his recruitment. The expectation, per Nakos, is that LSU will go all-in on trying to land Barrow.

Meanwhile, Michigan State saw transfer target Rene Konga, formerly of Rutgers, commit to Louisville on April 26. But the Spartans also offered former Bowling Green, Youngstown State and Illinois defensive lineman Anthony Johnson (6-3, 295, R-Sr.) earlier this spring. Johnson – who has already visited East Lansing – totaled 22 tackles, four sacks and one fumble recovery last season.

As it stands, Michigan State has veterans Maverick Hansen and D’Quan Douse in its defensive tackle room. Redshirt sophomore Alex VanSumeren will compete for a role with just four games of playing experience under his belt. True freshman Mikeshun Beeler will join the team this summer.
