Michigan State DL coach Legi Suiaunoa makes a strong first impression offering 2025 Virginia DL Samuel Cohen
Michigan State offered class of 2025 defensive lineman Samuel Cohen, of Richmond (VA) Huguenot High School on April 9. The Spartan offer was extended by defensive line coach Legi Suiaunoa, as the position coach continues to expand his recruiting board.
Cohen (6-3, 235) holds offers from Georgia, North Carolina, Tennessee, Wisconsin, Notre Dame, and others. He is ranked a three-star, the No. 749 overall recruit in the 2025 On3 Industry Rankings. Cohen is also ranked the No. 20 recruit in Virginia.
“It was new,” Cohen told SpartanMag.com of the Michigan State contact. “They reached out and we texted for a little while, then I got the call from Coach Suiaunoa.
“I think he is a great coach. I still have time to talk to him and get to know him and their staff better. He first talked to me about how he wanted to hear my story about how I came up on football. After that, he was telling me about Michigan State and how they run things up there and he offered me.”
Suiaunoa took an interesting angle when offering Cohen, asking him questions and listening him talk about his love for football. The position coach made a strong impression on Cohen during their first conversation.
“I really appreciated it because when a coach wants to hear about your background, and how you eventually grow up to play the sport, it gives off the vibe that really do believe you could be a part of their team,” Cohen said.
Cohen logged 44 total tackles, with 18 being for a loss as a junior in 2023 according to MaxPreps. He also logged six sacks during his junior season.
“There is many things I could describe myself as, but the main things I can say about myself are that I’m fast, twitchy, and explosive off the line every play,” Cohen said.
The Michigan State offer was somewhat of a surprise, but Cohen is excited to dive in and learn more about the program.
“Growing up, I didn’t watch much of Michigan State football,” Cohen said. “But, when I did (watch) a little bit, it was amazing. Off what I know about the program so far, it definitely feels like they could be there on decision day.”
Cohen will look to setup a visit to East Lansing to get a closer look at Michigan State and Suiaunoa. He is looking forward to getting an up close view at how practice is run.
“It would be great to be down there for a visit soon,” Cohen said. “I would love to learn how it feels to be an everyday player at Michigan State. Also, to see the energy during practice. Things like that make me excited.”
