Michigan makes NFL Draft history with selections of Jake Moody, Brad Robbins

It wouldn’t be the NFL draft without some history being made. And in the 2023 NFL Draft, the Michigan Wolverines were one of a handful of programs to etch their names in the history book.

With the seventh round wrapped up, Michigan has had a total of nine players selected this year. And of those nine, it is kicker Jake Moody selected in the third round by the San Francisco 49ers, and punter Brad Robbins selected in the sixth round by the Cincinnati Bengals, who made history for the maze and blue.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, this is just the second time in 40 years that a college programs kicker and punter have been selected in the same NFL draft.

“With San Francisco drafting kicker Jake Moody and Cincinnati drafting punter Brad Robbins, Michigan became the second school in the past 40 years to have a kicker and punter picked in the same draft. Utah had kicker Matt Gay and punter Mitch Wishnowsky both drafted in 2019,” wrote Schefter via Twitter.

Robbins played five seasons with the Wolverines but played just six games in 2019 and ‘20 combined. Over the course of 43 career games, Robbins punted 179 times for 7,698 yards and a 43 yards per punt average. He was the No. 10 specialist according to ESPN’s Mel Kiper. There were four punters drafted in 2022 and four back in 2018.

As a member of the Class of 2017, Robbins was a three-star recruit out of Westerville (Ohio) South, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. He was the No. 77 overall prospect in the state, the No. 8 punter in the class and the No. 2,075 overall prospect.

Moody converted 148-of-148 extra points since 2018. He went 69-of-84 on his field goal attempts and scored a grand total of 355 points at Michigan. As a member of the Class of 2018, Moody was not ranked, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. He played his high school football at Northville (Mich.) High.

Moody can drill kickoffs as well. Not only was he a solid field goal kicker in college, he has quite the boot as well. If he can improve longest distanced field goals, he could be very reliable in the pros.
