Michigan basketball expresses interest in Rutgers C transfer Lathan Sommerville

Michigan Wolverines basketball has expressed interest in Rutgers center transfer Lathan Sommerville, his agent, Ryan Murphy, told On3’s Joe Tipton. Other schools that have done so include Ohio State, Tennessee, Washington, Cincinnati, Butler, Oklahoma State, USC and Texas A&M.

The 6-foot-10, 260-pounder just wrapped up his freshman season at Rutgers and has three years of eligibility remaining.

According to On3’s rankings, Sommerville is the No. 77 overall player and No. 11 center in the NCAA transfer portal. Michigan is seeking big man through the portal, since it will lose graduate Vladislav Goldin and likely junior forward/center Danny Wolf after this season. The Maize and Blue are in the NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 and will play Auburn Friday night in Atlanta.

Appearing in 32 games with 15 starts, Sommerville averaged 8.2 points and 4.1 rebounds for the 15-17 Scarlet Knights in 2024-25. He was one of a few talented freshmen on the team, joining point guard Dylan Harper and wing Ace Bailey, both of whom are projected top-five NBA Draft picks this coming summer.

Sommerville shot 52.7 percent on two-point field goal attempts and was 1-of-9 from three-point distance. A physical player, he drew 4.5 fouls per 40 minutes and shot a stellar 86.3 percent from the free throw line.

Averaging 3.6 field goal attempts at the rim per game, Sommerville shot 70 percent from in close (71st percentile nationally). He also made 55.7 percent of his other in-the-paint attempts (88th percentile). Sommerville was much less efficient on mid-range shots (18.9 percent; 28th percentile).

Sommerville added 18 blocks and 13 steals on the defensive end. He averaged 21 minutes per game.

The Michigan transfer target played against the Wolverines twice this season, allowing head coach Dusty May and Co. the opportunity to see him from court level both in Piscataway in Ann Arbor.

Sommerville scored 6 points and added 5 rebounds and 2 assists in the first meeting at Jersey Mike’s Arena. He was fantastic in Ann Arbor, though, pouring in a season-high 17 points on 5-of-10 shooting from the field and 7-of-7 from the free throw line, also contributing 3 rebounds, 1 assist and 1 steal.

An Illinois native who played at Richwoods High School, Sommerville checked in as the No. 117 overall player and No. 23 power forward in the nation in the 2024 class.
