Miami working its way up for 2025 Michigan decommit LB who may visit for Georgia Tech game

Miami working its way up for 2025 Michigan decommit LB who may visit for Georgia Tech game

Buford (Ga.) 2025 linebacker Mantrez Walker has received plenty of attention since the three-star prospect decommitted from Michigan Sept. 11, including from Miami.

The Hurricanes have continued to climb on Walker’s radar following his decommitment and are now texting him “probably about three or four times per week,” the 5-foot-11, 215-pound prospect told CaneSport. He has his eyes on a game day visit to Hard Rock Stadium for Miami’s next game against Georgia Tech and said the Canes are recruiting him about as hard as Penn State, LSU Colorado, Louisville, Ole Miss and South Carolina.

The On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine projects South Carolina and Penn State have the best opportunity to land Walker after Michigan, who he recently decommitted from.

“I’m definitely interested (in Miami) and want to see what they have to offer,” Walker said. “They’re definitely one of my top five schools right now, so I definitely want to see everything they’ve got. They recruit very well, and I want to see how they continue to do throughout this season. They’re undefeated right now. I wasn’t expecting them to beat A&M, but they did, so they’re on a winning streak right now. So we’re going to see how things go from here.”

Walker has been a coveted linebacking target in the 2025 class with offers from programs including Ohio State, Tennessee and Florida. In addition to his possible Miami visit for Georgia Tech he has upcoming visits scheduled to Penn State Oct. 28, Colorado Sept. 30 and hopes to visit Louisville at some point.

Penn State, Colorado, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Louisville, Ole Miss, Stanford and South Carolina have all stood out to him over the past several weeks in addition to Miami.

“I was supposed to get to Miami for the Texas A&M game (Sept. 9), but I had some family stuff going on so I wasn’t able to make it,” Walker said. “I’ve got a couple of other visits planned, but I’m definitely trying to get to Miami.”

Miami made a recruiting group chat with Walker including head coach Mario Cristobal, linebackers coach Derek Nicholson and a bevy of off-field assistants and talks to different Miami staff members both in the group chat and individually.

“They talk to me about games and how I can come up there and dominate and make a huge impact, how they want to get me down there for a visit and stuff like that,” Walker said. “They tell me how I’m their top priority on their board and stuff like that.”

Walker said he’s looking for a program where he fits the defensive scheme, has a strong relationship with the coaching staff, will have opportunities to compete for playing time and will be properly developed.

CaneSport’s Take

Miami’s hot start to the 2023 season is continuing to pay dividends with the 2024, 2025 and 2026 recruiting classes, and Walker is no exception. It’s safe to say the Hurricanes’ undefeated start has helped spur his interest in the Canes, and Miami should only help its case by continuing to win.
