Hollywood (Fla.) Chaminade-Madonna four-star receiver Joshisa Trader, Miami’s top-ranked commit in the 2024 cycle, isn’t just leaning on his high school coaches as he prepares for his senior season — he’s also getting plenty of virtual advice from the Hurricanes’ coaching staff.

Trader, who committed to Miami July 13, still receives daily texts from the Hurricane’ coaching staff, led by receivers coach Kevin Beard, who talks to the 6-foot-0.5, 175-pound receiver about how he can improve his game and texts him drills he feels can help Trader take the next step.

“We’ve got a good connection,” Trader said. “(Beard) gives me stuff on releases, getting in and out of my breaks, stuff like that. Little technique things I don’t really know that he knows, he just lets me know them.”

Trader said the staff hasn’t told him if they want him to improve on any specific elements of his game and has only offered him luck on his senior year, but he wants to continue to take steps forward as Chaminade-Madonna sets its sights on a national championship. The Lions open the season against St. Frances Saturday and are Maxpreps’ No. 7 ranked team to start the year.

Trader wants to ensure he is at his best as the season begins and isn’t overly focused on his final season stats, although he expects his production to increase after recording 47 catches for 743 yards and seven touchdowns last season en route to becoming the No. 35 overall prospect in the On3 Industry Ranking and No. 9 receiver. He believes stats will come naturally if he brings his skillset to the table and he plays with maximum effort.

“The expectation is that national championship,” Trader said. “I want to win every game of the season, so that’s the goal.”

CaneSport’s Take

Trader is undoubtedly one of the most skilled recruits in the 2024 class and one of the country’s top receivers, but there are still some areas we feel he needs to improve heading into his senior year.

His pass-catching ability is second to none, and he and Five-Star Plus+ receiver Jeremiah Smith arguably have the best hands in the class. But, as we’ve said before, Trader needs to learn to consistently gain separation from defensive backs if he wants to take his game to the next level.

He already plays bigger than his size and has tremendous ball skills, but improving his releases off the line of scrimmage and his route running will help him better compete against longer, stronger, more physical and more technique-sound competition at the college level.
