Miami still recruiting additional 2025 QB despite Luke Nickel’s commitment

Miami’s decision to take Luke Nickel’s commitment hasn’t stopped the Hurricanes from recruiting blue-chip 2025 quarterbacks like Findlay (Ohio) four-star gunslinger Ryan Montgomery, who did not list the Canes in his top five schools earlier this month but is still considering the program.

Miami offensive coordinator Shannon Dawson and head coach Mario Cristobal have continued to pursue the 6-foot-3, 210-pound quarterback listed as the No. 16 signal caller in the 2025 class. Montgomery and his family plan to attend a Miami home game this fall but are still determining which weekend fits best with his schedule.

Dawson’s air raid concepts, the encouragement of potential success this season and the appeal of Miami’s brand and football history have kept Montgomery’s attention and has the Hurricanes still in the mix.

“I think (Dawson) just sounds authentic to us,” said Mike Montgomery, Ryan’s father. “We haven’t gotten to meet him in person, but we’ve had conversations on the phone and I feel like he’s a straight shooter who kind of tells it how it is. We know he’s had a lot of success at prior stops, and he’s been fairly consistent with Ryan even though they have a ’25 (quarterback) as well. We appreciate that, and I think everything lines up for them to have a positive year.”

Dawson told the Montgomerys he still intends to recruit Ryan as if he’s a top target despite Nickel committing earlier this month, and the family doesn’t have a problem with a two-quarterback class.

Miami still has plenty to prove this fall and still has work to do before Ryan considers making a decision, but “the fact that they’re still recruiting us like they don’t (have a quarterback), we’ll be receptive to that,” Mike said.

Dawson and Miami have “said all of the right things” since offering Ryan earlier this year, but when the rubber meets the road this weekend for the Hurricanes’ season opener, he’ll be looking for the Hurricanes to back up their recruiting talk with on-field performance.

“Ryan appreciates that Miami is a huge brand and kind of a sleeping giant with a lot of resources,” Mike said. “It’s a great school, obviously, so the big thing is going to be if they can get going at the beginning of the season. As long as they show progression, we will definitely be open to coming down to visit those guys.”

CaneSport’s Take

Given the possibility of future quarterback depth issues by the time the 2025 class rolls around, taking two quarterbacks in an upcoming class is a smart and aggressive bet. Having a surplus of young talent in the quarterback room is never a bad thing.
