Miami showing love to 4-star California QB who may set visit for Clemson game: “I want to feel the environment”

Miami already landed a 2025 quarterback in three-star Georgia signal caller Luke Nickel, but the Hurricanes are still showing love to other gunslingers in the class. Miami recently sent Orange (Calif.) Lutheran HS – Orange County four-star quarterback TJ Lateef a bundle of handwritten letters and recruiting notes trying to entice the 6-foot-2, 185-pound signal caller to come to Coral Gables. And while Lateef has plenty of other top programs pushing for him, receiving the letters was a nice reminder the Hurricanes still want him.

“I just feel like when the whole coaching staff sends me letters, I feel like that’s something special,” Lateef said. “Not a lot of colleges do that. Like, maybe one or two coaches will send me letters, but to have the whole coaching staff send me letters, I feel like that’s something special.”

Miami’s interest made Lateef feel important, and he says that he “definitely” wants to get to Coral Gables for a visit, possibly for the Hurricanes’ Oct. 21 game against Clemson.

“I want to feel the environment, see what they have to offer, things like that,” Lateef said. “I feel like they’re doing good this season. I want to go down there and visit.”

Colorado, Auburn and Penn State have made the most aggressive recruiting efforts for Lateef over the last several weeks, and he said he wants to visit all three programs. Oregon has also been in the race for Lateef.

CaneSport’s Take

It’s still very early, but it looks very possible Miami ends up taking two quarterbacks in the 2025 class. Nickel committed to the Hurricanes following his visit to campus for Miami’s end-of-summer recruiting barbecue in late July, but the Hurricanes are still talking to other 2025 quarterbacks like four-star Ohio gunslinger Ryan Montgomery and have occasional contact with four-star Fort Meyers (Fla.) Bishop Verot quarterback Carter Smith.

Montgomery plans to attend Miami’s Oct. 7 game against Georgia Tech (which is shaping up to be a huge recruiting weekend considering No. 1 overall 2024 prospect Jeremiah Smith and four-star Georgia decommit receiver Ny Carr will be in attendance), and Nickel already visited for Miami’s Week 2 game against Texas A&M.

Miami looks like it will be in a strong position to pick from multiple elite prospects should the Hurricanes indeed choose to take a second quarterback in the class and continue to build on their 4-0 start.
