Miami looking to flip 3-star Pittsburgh DL commit who says he hears from Hurricanes daily

Miami hasn’t stopped its pursuit of blue-chip 2024 defensive linemen like five-star LJ McCray or four-star Aydin Breland, but Columbus (Ohio) Thomas Worthington three-star Pittsburgh commit Francis Brewu has continued to be a name thrown around Miami recruiting circles since he received his offer Aug. 27.

Brewu has been treated like a priority recruit for Miami over the last month and has heard from the Hurricanes’ staff “every day” since he received his offer, which has largely entailed conversations with co-defensive line coach Joe Salave’a and head coach Mario Cristobal. He’s both played as an interior defensive lineman and on the edge at the high school level and stands at 6-foot-3 and 265 pounds.

“Just right after they offered me is when things really picked up,” Brewu said. “I’m just going through every opportunity I get sent my way. I just want to thoroughly go through the process and make sure I’m going through the (recruiting) process correctly.”

Miami’s attacking defensive scheme and defensive philosophies resonated strongly with Brewu, who wants to play in a defense oriented around winning in the trenches. The Hurricanes’ coaching staff has also helped Miami stand out as the program continues to push.

Brewu said he hopes to reach a final decision about totally shutting down his recruitment by the end of November and is planning on getting back to Pitt “a couple of times” this fall. Michigan State has also continued to recruit him, although he said he hasn’t given much thought to the Spartans’ current coaching situation.

Miami is at a pivotal moment with its 2024 recruiting class, particularly along the defensive line. The Hurricanes are still aggressively trying to land McCray and Breland as Miami looks to shore up its interior defensive line — an area the Canes have struggled to land recruits in Cristobal’s two full recruiting cycles as the program leader — but Brewu has quietly been a name to watch as well.

The Hurricanes are now battling the clock for Brewu after showing interest in the three-star recruit far later than most other programs he’s still considering, but Miami has a real shot. It’s possible he makes a trip to Miami this fall, although he also made clear Pitt is still his top choice and continues to hold his commitment.

However, it’s possible the Hurricanes ultimately give too little too late for a prospect who didn’t receive an offer until days before the season started.
