Miami in good position with 5-star Justin Scott entering OV this weekend, but Hurricanes await the mom test: “She’s ready to get down there”

Chicago (Ill.) St. Ignatius 2024 five-star defensive lineman Justin Scott, the No. 9 overall prospect in the class and No. 2 defensive lineman in the On3 Industry Ranking, will take his third trip to Miami this weekend for his official visit.
But it’s not just Scott the Hurricanes need to try to impress.
Scott’s official visit this weekend may wind up being less about impressing him and more about impressing his mother, who will be making her first trip to Coral Gables when she accompanies Scott. Miami’s coaching staff has spoken to her multiple times via Zoom and FaceTime, but this weekend will be the first time Scott’s mother interacts with the Hurricanes’ coaches face-to-face.
The On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine lists Miami as the leader for Scott heading into his official visit, and CaneSport entered a prediction for the 6-foot-5, 310-pound five-star to land in Coral Gables last month.
“Honestly, I haven’t talked to (his mother) about that,” Scott said when asked what his mother’s initial thoughts were on Miami’s staff. “I just know she’s ready to get down there and experience everything for the first time.”
Scott is fresh off an official visit to Michigan last weekend and an official visit to Georgia June 2. Both programs are still well in the mix for Scott along with Notre Dame and Ohio State, the latter of which Scott will visit next weekend. He said he felt Michigan and Georgia both made significant impressions on his first two official visits, and On3’s Chad Simmons reported Georgia was battling the Irish and Hurricanes to become Scott’s No. 1 school after his visit to Athens.
He took effectively a weeklong unofficial visit to Coral Gables the second week of April while in South Florida for spring break capped off by attending Miami’s spring game April 14, and the Hurricanes have remained in good standing with Scott since.
However, his official visits will play a major role in his recruitment.
“They’re going to play a big role, because I’m only official visiting the schools I could see myself playing at,” Scott said. “So I think these official visits will play big (roles).”
It’s hard for Scott to describe specifically what will be the deciding factor for him in his recruitment other than player development, but he’ll know when he gets “that feeling.” He said he’s considering committing “before summer ends, possibly.” Otherwise, he could also commit whenever he feels the time is right and is staying open-minded.
CaneSport’s Take
We’ve followed Scott’s recruitment very closely since the start of the new calendar year, and we’re confident in saying Miami is in a tremendous position for him. We continue to stand by the RPM entered for Scott to land at Miami back in May as the program continues their recruitment, and if all goes well this weekend, Miami could find itself in an even better position.
